After weeks of scolding from my wife, I have decided to take learning German a lot more seriously. So as some of you know, I plan to migrate sometime soon to Western Europe (Yes, I am a bloody prospective immigrant who plans to take all your jobs). One of the requirements for my visa is that I speak and understand German. I have decided to put more time into it. I have barely six months to achieve this goal so I need to put in all the work and practice as much as I can.
Fun fact, German is such an interesting language and it is quite similar to English (in some way). The lexical structure of both languages seems quite similar ( I hope I am not shooting myself in the leg by saying this because I am just starting to learn German). Before now, I heard German was one of the hardest languages to learn, so I have been somewhat procrastinating learning it, but I cannot do that anymore because my wife won't let me.
STEPS I AM TAKING TO LEARN GERMAN.
So I took the bold step of paying for a one-year subscription on Duolingo. I know, I know, Duolingo is not the best option when it comes to learning a new language. Yes, I have seen the TikTok review. However, it is still a step in the right direction for me as a beginner. I want to get familiar with the languages while exploring other ways of learning German.
Aside from Duolingo, I plan to incorporate listening to German music and watching German movies into my daily routine. One thing I have noticed with Duolingo it is more visual than auditory. So I need to train my ears to pick up German words more quickly; get familiar with how the language is spoken; and also pick up common German slang and phrases.
I found this interesting German playlist on Spotify. there are about 15 tracks on it and I plan to learn at least 2-4 songs on the playlist monthly. I think this will help me learn faster. In addition, I was also subscribed to Netflix after a very long time, so I can search for German movies. The goal here is to become acquainted with the language.
When it comes to the speaking part, I plan to practise with my wife. we can speak to each other in German for 30 minutes every day. I also have a friend in Germany, and I plan to ask her to have speaking sessions with me whenever she has the time, so I can learn faster. She is familiar with the language and can help correct my pronunciation when I get certain words or phrases wrong.
So this is how I plan to learn German. I am going to put myself on the spot by promising to make a video next week singing a German song. My voice is horrible so don't expect much but you get the gist. Doing my best to make creating content more fun for me again. This is the only way I can stay consistent. well, that is all for now, cheers!
