This week has been the happiest I have been in the last 12 months. For the first time in a while everything felt right; I felt right. I wasn't struggling with fatigue or complaining about much. On the contrary I did the very thing I love doing–writing and more, and that brought me so much joy.
How did we get here?
I took a big decision weeks ago to let go of certain things to prioritize my mental health and future. For the longest time I have felt trapped by so many things, but recently I have begun to accept my humanity and the fact that I cannot save everybody. It just dawned on me that I have taken up more than I should and for no justifiable reason.
I used to attribute everything I do for love, because I felt it was the right way to live, but deep down all I have was resent for everything and everyone I care about. It felt like the more I gave the more things were taken from me. So I decided to take my foot off the pedal, to first relax (because I needed it), and then rethink my position.
They say the life of a man is plagued with struggles. This is what shapes one's manhood 🙃. Although these words resonates with me, I have also had to trackback and ask myself: whose struggle am I catering to? Because they are certainly not mine. I do not have a dream or goal that is specifically mine, and right now it feels like the wrong way to live. I have to find my way back to myself. If not anything but just to remember who I was and hopefully that gives me some insight into who I should become.
A recent event got me rethinking about my stance on life, family, friendship etc. I had to realign my priorities and at the top of that list was me for the first time. All my life I have been living vicariously through others. I believed strongly in selfless service until I recently started to see the flaws in my premises about love and service. I realized that there was nothing selfless about how I love. Just like most people I need my love to be reciprocated and appreciated, which is so much to ask from people but we do so because of love.
Unfortunately I cannot stop loving; I cannot stop serving. These are my core values and source of identity. However, as much as I cannot stop doing these things totally, I can avoid loving and caring for people at my expense. "To obey is better than sacrifice" and I have come to realize that sacrifices are usually performative and a debt waiting to be paid in the future. Unfortunately no one really understands your sacrifices and they keep demanding for more.
What is love without sacrifice? I don't know. To be honest, I don't think it can be called love if it is expressed at one's convenience. However, I will be fine with whatever existence is in-between the lines as long as it eliminates the dependency or expectancy that comes with loving selflessly. I guess this has been the source of my happiness recently. I know I am failing a lot of people without failing myself because it is far worse when I am getting the same result–failing people and losing myself in the process.
So this is my resolve going further. I am not afraid of failing anyone. In fact, I am fallible, I accept this truth. Thinking otherwise is counterintuitive. I also realize that people do not understand good intentions and that's fine. I will not burden anyone with my expectation of empathy nor would I be pressured by their expectancy of love.
