Today I will like to start by asking a few questions:
Are you here because you've been deplalformed from any social media platform?
How important is an immutable blockchain to you?
How important is free speech to you?
If you have to choose between free speech and the tokens you hold right now, which would you pick?
I honestly cannot speak for the vast majority of people who use this blockchain. However, I strongly believe that to a certain degree most people are basically here to earn tokens. An immutable blockchain was just something that was sold to us along the way. Many of us have never had our accounts suspended or shadowbanned; many of us do not even care if that happens. I have encountered a few supposed influencers on twitter who had lost their account for breaking one of twitter's many rules--most of which we are not aware of because we fail to read the terms and conditions for using the platform. Our data might be in the market right now and it doesn't really matter as long as we can connect with the people we want to connect with and chase clout. That's the society we live in--a society of tradeoffs. People are willing to forgo one thing for another.
Freedom of speech is quite a very dicey subject. I personally do not agree that everyone has the right to say whatever they want. I don't believe people passing wrong information should be given a platform; I do not believe people who spread hate should be given a platform. I think we feel the same way about thieves, rapist, terrorist, etc yes they do have rights as long as they respect the rights of others. Where it actually becomes tricky is determining who calls the shots--who decides what gets banned or not? Normally, before anyone can be denied their rights, they should have broken the law and legal process of determining the adequate punishment for breaking such laws or denying another person their right. Although centralised this seems fair as everyone who has an interest in the case is fully aware of its merit and demerit. However, when it comes to censorship on centralised platforms it is unclear and a bit cynical. So I do understand people's agitation for free speech. Personally, I feel a consensus should be reached to determine what should be censored. However, we can also agree that within majority groups there are minority groups and it's easy for such groups to be marginalised. This might leave us with one alternative: having people speak freely about the things they want to talk about and having people decide what they should pay attention to.
So going back to today's topic, I don't think the world is ready for blockchain technology. It is light years ahead of many things we have on the ground. The social sphere is at a defining stage and personally, I am just watching how things unfold. I have come to see my journey here as a fun experiment.
