The first book revolves around three characters—detectives Jane Rizzoli and Thomas Moore, and Dr. Catherine Cordell—all of whom become entangled in a series of horrific murders. A killer is stalking Boston with a bizarre modus operandi: he targets sleeping women, drugs them with chloroform, brutally tortures and kills them, and then removes their uteruses. This killer’s methods mirror those of another murderer who was active in Savannah—a case where Dr. Cordell was the only surviving victim. When the killings begin again, Moore initially fails to link them to the earlier case; he is preoccupied with his work and an investigation alongside Jane Rizzoli. She is a strong, tough woman—though not particularly friendly—who always seems ready to lash out; even the mild-mannered, calm Moore struggles to collaborate with her and her abrasive personality.

This raises suspicions in Jane Rizzoli, who doesn't view the doctor as merely an innocent victim. But if the Savannah Killer is dead, who is the Boston Killer? Is it a precise copycat obsessed with the previous killer's victim? Dr. Cordell’s life turns into a nightmare of terror as the killer plays cat-and-mouse with her and the police. Moore tries to protect her and grows close to her—much to the disapproval of his colleague Rizzoli, who considers the relationship inappropriate. This book blends police procedural, medical drama, thriller, and crime genres; it is exceptionally well-written—though be warned, it is gritty and intense, not for the faint of heart! It is a suspenseful, emotionally charged, and never-boring read; I actually devoured the whole thing in a single evening! A true little thriller masterpiece—I can't wait to read the other books in the series!
