Good evening, blog friends—how are you? I’ve been quite busy today, but here I am to review one of the latest books I’ve read. It isn’t a masterpiece, and the writing is very simple, but it makes for a pleasant read—a book suitable even for less demanding readers. Let me tell you a little about the plot: the protagonist, Baloorma, is a young girl living on the Mongolian steppes. Hers is a simple yet arduous nomadic life spent following herds, setting up the yurt, observing ancient rituals and customs, cooking over an open fire, sewing, and shearing yaks. It is a simple life that she truly loves; this part of the book describes life on the steppe in great detail—which was my favorite aspect—evoking images of vast, boundless plains and a frugal existence. During this time, Baloorma sets out to create a red cashmere sweater—cashmere being a vital source of livelihood for most local populations. She pours her heart and soul into the project, eventually using plant-based dyes to craft a magnificent, unique red cashmere sweater. She reluctantly sells the garment to an Italian woman named Alessandra—the owner of a unique cashmere shop in Prato—who occasionally travels to the borders of Mongolia to source and resell the region's finest cashmere.

Alessandra is captivated by the sweater; genuinely impressed by Baloorma’s immense talent, she leaves her contact details with her. Back in Italy, she immediately puts the sweater on display—though not for sale—and customers fall in love with it, clamoring to buy the famous little red sweater and driving Alessandra and her colleague Giulia wild with the demand. Meanwhile, Baloorma’s life changes drastically. Urged on by his brothers, her father decides to leave behind the steppe lifestyle—which his children have no desire to continue—in favor of city life. However, city living is far from easy: the housing is bleak, the sky is rarely visible, and factory work feels like slavery, characterized by mistreatment and meager wages. It is during one of these grueling factory jobs that Baloorma befriends a Chinese girl. After much reflection and fed up with the constant abuse at work, the two decide to run away and attempt to reach Italy. The undertaking is long and perilous, requiring them to cross numerous countries as undocumented migrants. Thus begins their journey—a trek marked by encounters both good and bad, appalling conditions, stories of others seeking new hope, fears, a lack of money, hunger, and the enduring hope of arriving in Italy safe and sound. It is a delicate book written in a clear, direct style; in my opinion, the sections describing the steppe and the journey as undocumented migrants are the most compelling. It is an enjoyable, fast-paced read—a story of dreams, strength, and resilience.
