"Observa a tu alrededor.

"Look around you. Look at people how they love each other, how they hate each other, how they attack each other and how they show affection and then write." That's what my friend Luis Yuseff, a Cuban poet, once told me. The poet is also a chronicler of his environment, of what he sees on the street and in amazement he writes. That is why I wrote this little poem in two parts, after seeing so much misery when I went out to look for poetry through the streets of my city:

liturgias
(uno)

Vimos morir al hombre
Pasamos como peces
temiendo que la muerte saltara
de su cuerpo al nuestro

Le vimos contraerse
como un perro envenenado
le escuchamos vomitar verdades
nos sentimos heridos
callamos

II

III

Blake aquí también
sangra la rama
y la ciudad es un árbol
centenario que sufre
sus propias destrucciones
A veces una hoja
se desploma y acaba
con dos vidas a la vez
La mía espera
volver a ver las floraciones.

liturgies
(one)

We watched the man die
We pass like fish
fearing that death would jump
from his body to ours

We saw him contract
like a poisoned dog
we heard him vomit truths
we feel hurt
we shut up

II

The man was a weak being
he devoured a raw fish
he spread salt to marinate the meat
he painfully swallowed the thorns

People ran to look again
they carried their children on their shoulders
—as they are taken to see the circus.

III

Blake here
the branch bleeds too
and the city is a tree
centenarian suffering
their own destructions
sometimes a leaf
collapses and ends
with two lives at once
mine waits
see the blooms again.
