In the Old Testament, God permitted polygamy among some people such as Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon, but this did not mean it was His perfect design for marriage.
Many biblical accounts show that polygamy often brought jealousy, conflict, and division within families. At the beginning of this life God wanted us to marry only one woman and the woman marry only one man.
In the New Testament, the teaching about marriage points more clearly toward monogamy. Jesus referred back to God’s original creation plan, and church leaders were instructed to be the husband of one wife.
