Maspalomas dunes and lighthouse 🇪🇸 [Eng][Esp]

Ahhh... Maspalomas (sigh).
There is no other way, inside my head, to start talking about this place. Especially now, that we are going through a strong winter. It was a great idea to have planned this getaway at this time of year. To go from 4ºC at the airport in Madrid, to feel a purely tropical climate after only three hours, has no compare.

That said, this getaway was planned with an absolute low-cost profile, it couldn't be otherwise when it's so close to the Christmas season, which usually leaves us with limited resources. xD

Starting by choosing the flight with RyanAir, which offered the cheapest option, although as usual with tight schedules, and ending with internal transportation, always using public transportation.

The truth is that I can not complain about the public transport system in Gran Canaria, for one who is passing through, the connections are quite well distributed and the schedules with ample service during the day but at night you have to be more cautious.

An additional aspect that I loved was the warmth and cheerfulness of the drivers and the service staff. The first contact was with a girl who organized the users at the airport bus stop, who was super attentive and kind in explaining and showing us how to move to our destination.

Then, during the days we spent there, every bus driver we boarded greeted us with a smile, often commenting about the day or whatever, always being very friendly. I don't know if it's the warm weather, but I have never seen drivers so happy with their work and so affable in attending passengers.

Ahhh... Maspalomas. (suspiro).
No hay otra forma, dentro de mi cabeza, para comenzar a hablar de este lugar. Sobre todo ahora, que estamos atravesando un potente invierno. Haber planeado esta escapada en fechas así, ha sido una gran idea. Pasar de los 4ºC que hacía en el aeropuerto de Madrid, a sentir un clima puramente tropical después de tan solo tres horitas, no tiene comparación.

Eso sí, esta escapada fue planeada con un perfil absoluto de bajo costo, no podía ser de otra manera cuando se está tan cerca de la época decembrina aún, que suele dejarnos con recursos limitados. xD

Comenzando por elegir el vuelo con RyanAir, que ofrecía la opción más económica, aunque como casi siempre con horarios bastante ajustados, y terminando por el medio de transporte interno, siempre movilizándonos en transporte público.

La verdad es que no me puedo quejar del sistema de trasporte público en Gran Canaria, para uno que va de paso, las conexiones están bastante bien distribuidas y los horarios con un amplio servicio durante el día, ya por la noche hay que estar más atento.

Un aspecto adicional que me encantó fue la calidez y alegría de los conductores y el personal del servicio. El primer contacto fue con una chica que organizaba a los usuarios en la parada de bus del aeropuerto, quien fue super atenta y amable en explicar e indicarnos cómo movernos hasta nuestro destino.

Luego, durante los días que pasamos allí, cada conductor de bus al que subíamos nos recibía con una sonrisa, muchas veces hacían algún comentario sobre el día o de lo que fuese, mostrándose siempre muy amigables. No sé si es el clima cálido, pero jamás había visto conductores tan contentos con su trabajo y afables atendiendo a los pasajeros.

It never hurts to clarify that the main objective of this and any of my trips is to get to know the local gastronomy.

So, with no further thought, after a trip with schedules that truncated our breakfast, we decided to enjoy the early lunchtime in those regions and at noon we were well-installed in a small place that offered us a very accessible and homey experience.

Nunca está de más aclarar que el objetivo fundamental de este y cualquiera de mis paseos, es conocer la gastronomía local.

Así que sin pensarlo demasiado, después de un viaje con horarios que nos truncaban el desayuno, decidimos aprovechar el temprano horario de comida que se lleva por esos lados y a las 12:00 del día estábamos bien instalados en un pequeño local que nos ofreció una experiencia muy accesible y hogareña.

Satisfied and with the stomach properly loaded to start the touristic tour, we crossed some of the big avenues of Maspalomas, very close to the area of Playa del Inglés where almost everything is tourist apartments and night party places, so during the day it is usually very quiet.

We started heading to the very famous dunes, which are the natural attractions of the area, besides the beaches of course. We accessed the natural park crossing the huge Hotel Riu which offers a striking structure that can be seen from the traffic circle in front of it.

No need to access the hotel, you cross the structure accessing a path of palm trees, this allows you to find yourself right in front of the dunes that grace the horizon and form a nice contrast to the striking blue sea.

Satisfechos y con el estómago bien cargado para iniciar el recorrido turístico, atravesamos algunas de las grandes avenidas de Maspalomas, muy cercanos a la zona de Playa del Inglés en donde casi todo son apartamentos turísticos y locales de fiesta nocturna, así que durante el día suele estar muy tranquilo.

Comenzamos dirigiéndonos a las muy famosas dunas, que son el atractivo natural de la zona, además de las playas claro. Accedimos al parque natural atravesando el enorme Hotel Riu que ofrece una llamativa estructura que se aprecia desde la rotonda que tiene en frente.

Sin necesidad de acceder al hotel, se atraviesa su estructura accediendo a un camino de palmeras, este permite encontrarte justo enfrente de las dunas que decoran el horizonte y que forman un bonito contraste con el impactante azul del mar.

Truth is that the route is beautiful, a landscape that is worth seeing live if you don't live near such arid areas.

On the other hand, the walk on the sand is a bit tortuous, I did not imagine that I could get tired while we crossed these sand formations heading to the beach, but the truth is that halfway I started to give a little more attention to the pain in my thighs than to the desire to take pictures.

I find it hard to understand how there are people who run through this area, exercising with a ground that shows so much resistance and an almost unbearable heat. There are endless ways to relax, no doubt.

Our tour through the dunes was a 40-minute walk, we stopped to take some pictures but without wasting too much time because the sun was quite strong. I wanted to get to the beach and hide under an umbrella, but they took away my illusions quickly telling me that it would not be so easy, and they were right.

La verdad es que el recorrido es precioso, un paisaje que vale mucho la pena ver en directo si no resides cerca de zonas tan áridas.

Por otro lado, la caminata sobre la arena se hace un poco tortuosa, no me imaginaba que pudiera cansarme mientras atravesábamos estas formaciones de arena dirigiéndonos a la playa, pero lo cierto es que a la mitad de camino comencé a darle un poco más de importancia al dolor en los muslos que a las ansias de tomar fotos.

Me cuesta comprender cómo hay personas que atraviesan esta zona corriendo, ejercitándose con un suelo que muestra tata resistencia y un calor casi insoportable. Hay formas infinitas de relajarse, sin duda.

Nuestro recorrido por las dunas fue una caminata de 40 minutos, nos detuvimos para hacer algunas fotos pero sin perder mucho rato porque el sol era bastante fuerte. Yo quería llegar a la playa y ocultarme bajo una sombrilla, pero me quitaron las ilusiones rápido diciéndome que eso no sería tan fácil, y tenían razón.

When we left the dunes, found the beaches of the south coast of the island. The beach of Maspalomas is invisibly divided into several sections, the family and petfriendly closest to the lighthouse, and at the other end, where we arrived that day, the nudist and gayfriendly area.

People party at night and spend all day on the beach, you can tell by the intense tan that almost everyone shows.

As for getting a spot, it was not easy to find a rental place, because the available ones were those where the umbrella could not provide shade.

So we found a comfortable spot on one of the beaches, sat on the sand and spent the rest of the day swimming there until sunset approached and we headed towards the lighthouse to better appreciate it.

It was hard to get a picture of our piece of beach without any of the nudists present. Although we were in our swimsuits, all around us were people, mostly quite old, sunbathing and bathing without any clothes on.
It was the place for it and people were enjoying their full-body tans, but it seemed disrespectful to take pictures.

Cuando salimos de las dunas, nos encontramos con las playas de la costa sur de la isla. La playa de Maspalomas esta dividida de forma invisible en varios tramos, el familiar y petfriendly mas cercano al faro y al otro extremo, por donde llegamos ese día, la zona nudista y de gayfriendly.

Las gente se va de fiesta en la noche y pasa todo el día en la playa, se puede notar por el bronceado intenso que muestran casi todos.

En cuanto a conseguir sitio, realmente no fue fácil lo de ubicar algúntoldo de alquiler, pues los que estaban disponibles eran esos en los que la sombrilla no lograba hacer sombra.

Así que encontramos un hueco cómodo en una de las playas, nos sentamos en la arena y pasamos ahí el resto del día bañándonos hasta que se acercó el atardecer y nos dirigimos hacia el faro para aprecia mejor la puesta de sol.

Difícil fue llegar a hacer una foto de nuestro trozo de playa sin que se mostrara alguno de los nudistas presentes. A pesar de que nosotros estábamos en bañador, en todo nuestro alrededor estaban personas, en su mayoría bastante mayores, tomando el sol y bañándose sin nada de ropa.
Era el sitio para ello y la gente disfrutaba de su bronceado cuerpo completo, pero me parecía irrespetuoso ponerme a sacar fotos.

We walked towards the lighthouse chasing the sunset and enjoying the changing colors of the sky. I love it when you see the sailboats in the distance, I think it's one of those typical romantic images we always picture of the sea.

A bit tricky to take pictures from where we were headed, with the sun setting right in front of us the glare hindered the images.

However there was a lot to see during the tour, people all in their bathing suits playing with their families and artists making sculptures out of sand or rocks.

Caminamos hacia el faro persiguiendo el atardecer y disfrutando del cambio de colores que ofrecía el cielo. Me encanta cuando se ven los veleros a lo lejos, creo que es una de esas típicas imágenes románticas que siempre imaginamos del mar.

Un poco complicado tomar fotos desde el punto de donde nos dirigimos, con el sol poniendo justo frente a nosotros el resplandor entorpecía las imágenes.

Sin embargo había mucho que ver durante el recorrido, personas todas con sus trajes de baño jugando con sus familiar y a los artistas haciendo esculturas de arena o con rocas.

We were somewhat surprised to see the temperature of 30ºC when we arrived at the lighthouse. Impossible to expect that on the mainland at that point in the winter, a total wonder.

I indeed prefer it a little cooler, but being on the beach with the sea breeze it wasn't overwhelming at all.

Around the lighthouse there were a lot of people, walking along the coast and inside a shopping center full of stores nearby.

The square behind the lighthouse has an interesting statue. It is a fountain shaped like a moray eel with a man on it, it is quite particular and I thought it was worth showing and keeping as a memorable image.

En cierta forma nos sorprendió ver la temperatura de 30ºC que hacia cuando llegamos al faro. Imposible esperar eso en la península a esas alturas del invierno, una maravilla total.

Es verdad que lo prefiero un poco más fresco, pero al estar en la playa con la brisa marina no se hacía para nada agobiante.

Alrededor del faro había muchísima gente, de paseo por la costa y dentro de un centro comercial lleno de tiendas que hay cerca.

La plaza que está detrás del faro tiene una estatua interesante. Se trata de una fuente en forma de morena con un hombre sobre ella, es bastante particular y me pareció digna de mostrar y tener para el recuerdo.

Slightly dissatisfied with my limited light position and technical resources to capture some interesting light effects, I took some time to play with the exposures and get some figures on the beach shore.

I didn't get great photos, but the one that pleased me the most was a little girl approaching the water with a lot of curiosity. There's a lot to work on in this image, but that doesn't mean you have to stop exercising these types of shots.

The same thing happened to me at nightfall with the illumination of the lighthouse, but the truth is that I didn't take much time to capture it in the best way. The day had been long and the inclement sun had exhausted me quite a bit.

Un poco descontenta con mi limitada posición respecto a la luz y los escasos recursos técnicos para captar algunos juegos de luces interesantes, me tomé un rato para jugar con las exposiciones y conseguir alguna figura en la orilla de la playa.

No obtuve grandiosos resultados, pero el que más me agradó fue el de una niña que se acerba al agua con mucha curiosidad. Hay mucho que trabajar en esta imagen, pero no por eso hay que dejar de ejercitar ese tipo de tomas.

Lo mismo me pasó al caer la noche con la iluminación del faro, pero la verdad es que no me tomé mucho tiempo para captarlo de la mejor manera. El día había sido largo y el inclemente sol me había agotado bastante.

This first day in Gran Canaria was really nice, the weather is wonderful if you have some shade from time to time to shelter you.

A pity that it is such a remote destination, but otherwise it would not be so paradisiacal.

That day we walked about 18k steps, being that we were going quite calmly and not forcing the time because we had done the trip the same day, which is always exhausting.

It didn't really feel that much and in the evening the city feels much cooler. Going back to the lodging was a comfortable and refreshing walk, beers included haha.

There was still a lot more to see over there, but we continued as we planned the trip, calmly and without rushing. :)

Este primer día en Gran Canaria fue realmente agradable, el clima es una maravilla si cuentas con algo de sombra de vez en cuando para resguardarte.

Una pena que sea un destino tan alejado, aunque de cualquier otra forma no sería tan paradisíaco.

Ese día caminamos unos 18k pasos, siendo que íbamos con bastante calma y sin forzar el tiempo por haber hecho el viaje el mismo día, que siempre resulta agotador.

No se sintió tanto realmente y ya al anochecer la ciudad se siente mucho más fresquita. Volver hasta el alojamiento fue un recorrido cómodo y refrescante, cervezas incluidas jaja.

Aún hubo mucho más que ver por allá, pero lo continuamos tal como planificamos el viaje, con calma y sin apuros. :)
