Four years ago I walked through the gates of my university thinking I wasn’t even going to survive a day here because this wasn’t what I was expecting to see. Now let’s rewind.

Earlier in 2019, I applied to about 3 universities in Ghana and I was really expecting a positive reply from at least two. First one came in early but even though I got in I didn’t like the course I was being offered so I decided not to accept to. My parents tried to convince me to but I knew what I wanted so I turned the offer down.

Schools had reopened and classes were in session but I was at home still waiting on this one school. I was getting really frustrated so I decided to apply for the university I’m currently at even though I didn’t want to go there but I needed a plan B. I applied and within a few days I got a positive reply. I got the course I wanted and I could start the following week.

Now, I had to make a tough decision which was to either keep waiting for that last school to give me a reply or just pack my bags and go to this one. I finally run out of patience and I packed up my bags. For someone who hadn’t been away from home before this was a new thing to me. My university was almost 24 hours away from home and I didn’t even know there so my dad took me all the way to my hostel room.

Now guess what? As soon as I arrived on campus and entered my hostel room, I got a reply for this one school I had been waiting for and it was a good one. My dad said it was okay if I didn’t want to come here, we could go back and settle the fees for the other school so I could go there? I was like what? I can’t let the money we paid here go to waste and since I’m already here, I guess God has a plan for me and that’s when my 4 years in the university started.

I didn’t really have a good start as I was way behind my mates in class and I didn’t have any new friends then but along the line o caught up with my course mates, made a few friends and started living my life. These past few years hasn’t been really bad as I have seen myself grow from what I was then to what I am now.

I have learnt the ways of life, what to do and what not to do in every situation, how to talk to people, making friends, and everything. I have met people who have impacted my life greatly and I have also impacted the life of others. I look back to when I first arrived here and I realize how far I’ve come. I have learnt to be independent, carry myself well, also help others.

I would say that coming to this university has been a blessing in disguise. I have been presented with a lot of big opportunities which I made good use of. I have challenged myself to be better at everything I do and even though I know that I wouldn’t be here forever, I’m glad I took the step to come here in the first place.

One most important thing that I have learnt within the past four years is that, life doesn’t always go as planned and people wouldn’t always be what you think they are. Even at your lowest when you think your life isn’t worth living, I want to tell you that that’s just the beginning of your story.

Coming to the university has been the greatest blessing in disguise in my life and I don’t regret taking this step.
