Green Cities

Greetings, friends of the #GreenZone community. Today I share with you some green reflections on the importance of trees in our environment, even for better mental health.

I have a friend from another Latin American country who, on her first visit to Cuba, was struck by the amount of green in the cities. For her, it was a surprise that, in addition to the trees in parks and squares, there were so many gardens and flower beds (that space on avenues and sidewalks).

I must admit that for us, it is an element we take for granted. Furthermore, we criticize when its aesthetics are not maintained or we suggest types of plants for each space, like specialists.
Every day of the year, invariably, we travel through large sectors of the city almost from one end to the other. Be it for work, school, or leisure. The truth is that we sometimes feel like collective owners of the city's greenery and we notice when it is missing, but almost never when it is abundant.

The inhabitants of Cuban cities or towns know well the harshness of the sun at its different times. Also, where to find a porch or at times some bushes that serve as a hiding place from the rays of the Sun King.
We are extremely grateful when planting more trees is part of public actions.Walking through a green landscape is not the same as walking through desolate and gray spaces.

Beyond the vital need for trees in our environment, experts have demonstrated the importance of green in our lives for better mental health and less consumption of medication.
The low rates of tree planting even affect the severe drought we suffer.Worldwide, there should be a certain amount of square meters of green per inhabitant. But in reality, this is often not met.
Some cities in the world have implemented public policies aimed at this care for the environment,as part of a sustainable future. Among them are the European cities of Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Reykjavik. But there are also some in the United States and South Africa.

Sometimes people pass by natural resources insensitively, they forget about the gardens. The presence of parks, micro-parks, squares, flower beds, and road dividers is not a whim of the builders.

Each of these areas has a function, and so will the species that are planted, whether for their landscaping contribution, for shade, and in almost all cases, they influence soil protection or the water regime.
The preservation of the areas does depend on the culture and awareness of the citizens. In cities, trees with deep root systems are generally planted to avoid damaging sidewalks and roads; where there are power lines, they must be species that do not reach great heights.

Beyond landscape improvement, trees constitute the lungs of cities by acting as a sink for carbon dioxide and providing oxygen in return; they also add organic matter to the soil, send moisture into the atmosphere, thus influencing the temperature, and serve as a home for animal species.

More advanced societies demonstrate this and have created a kind of artificial tree to clean the environment of toxins, in others to store solar energy.
In these parts,we know well the value of their shade. With all that, it is enough to give them a hand, in order to live in green and healthy environments.
