A few days ago, while I was tending to my small garden of medicinal plants, I experienced one of the simplest and most profound joys I've had in recent months. There it was: my Mexican oregano plant, the one with the broad, velvety, and succulent leaves, looking completely lush and healthy.

alt

It's been only about four months since I planted it, and I remember sticking those little cuttings into the soil almost with skepticism, hoping they would take root but not being entirely sure. Today, it has not only survived but has grown into a small, vibrant bush, and for me, it's a true treasure.

alt

This plant always held a special place in my grandmother's heart. I remember her in her kitchen, using her skilled hands to pluck a couple of leaves from her pot to toss into the tomato sauce. The aroma it released when it hit the hot oil is a scent that instantly transports me back to my childhood. Beyond that, I can't forget that my grandmother's love for oregano went beyond the kitchen; she knew its healing secrets.

alt

This morning, my daughter woke up with the first signs of a cold. I thought of my grandmother and headed to the balcony. I cut a few sprigs from my precious oregano, caressing its large, soft leaves, and put them to boil in a cup of water. In just a few minutes, the kitchen filled with that unmistakable aroma. As the tea steeped, I felt a very special connection, an invisible bridge linking my grandmother, my daughter, and me through that simple plant.

alt

I served the tea to my little one, warm and with a teaspoon of honey. I hope it soothes her throat and helps her feel better. She may not know that she's drinking a piece of our family history and receiving a remedy that doesn't come from a pharmacy, but from the earth that I have cared for with my own hands, following the example of the woman I loved so much.

alt

Watching her sip that tea slowly, I confirm something I always suspected: Mexican oregano, with its broad, juicy leaves, is much more than an aromatic herb; it is also a legacy and a reminder that nature, when well cultivated, offers us everything we need. Having it at home, watching it grow, and being able to use it to care for my loved ones is one of the most beautiful gifts life has given me. It is my little green treasure, the same one my grandmother cared for.

La magia del orรฉgano orejรณn

alt

Hace unos dรญas, mientras revisaba mi pequeรฑo huerto de plantas medicinales, me llevรฉ una de las alegrรญas mรกs simples y profundas que he tenido en los รบltimos meses. Ahรญ estaba mi planta de orรฉgano orejรณn, esa de hoja ancha, aterciopelada y tan jugosa, completamente frondosa y saludable.

alt
