Me dijo: โOye, ยฟpor quรฉ no te consigues unos lentes mรกgicos?

Yesterday I went for a walk through the downtown streets of my beloved Camagรผey. It was a quiet afternoon, the kind where the sun filters through the columns of old balconies and the city seems to sigh to the rhythm of its cobblestones. I intended to clear my mind, to connect with myself and with the surroundings that have so often given me beautiful postcard views, but I began to notice something that pulled me out of that peaceful state: the trash bins. They appeared on every corner, overflowing, some with torn bags, others with smells that made me quicken my pace. And my thought, almost automatic, was: โHow lovely it would be if all these trash bins disappeared.โ
I stayed trapped in that idea for a while and started counting the containers, noticing the scattered waste, feeling a certain helplessness. Why do they have to be here? Why canโt we have an immaculate historic center, worthy of the postcards we boast so much about? And in that mental murmur of complaint, something inside me stopped, and I laughed to myself because I realized that, without meaning to, I had put on very dark glasses: the glasses of โeverything is wrong,โ of โso much is missing,โ of โthis should be different.โ
Right at that moment I remembered a lesson a friend gave me years ago, when I was going through a rough patch. She said, โHey, why donโt you get yourself some magic glasses?โ At the time I took it as a nice but naive phrase. However, yesterday, in front of those Camagรผey trash bins, I finally understood what she meant.
I decided to try the experiment and imagined putting on imaginary glasses with lenses that shift the focus. Then, instead of fixing my gaze on the torn garbage bag, I looked up a little higher, and right behind a gray container there was an iron gate blooming with purple bougainvillea. I also noticed that a little farther away, a girl was sharing a piece of bread with a stray dog, and both seemed happy, while a bit further off the bell tower of the Cathedral was turning orange in the sunset.
The trash bins were still there, of course, because they didnโt disappear by magic, but I had stopped seeing them as the center of the scene. With my magic glasses, the ugly became a simple blurry background, while the beautiful leaped to the front, sharp, full of color and life. And I felt enormous relief, not because I had solved the problem of urban cleanliness, but because I realized that I can walk the same streets and choose a completely different experience.
I thought about all the times I complain about what is missing, what is wrong, what bothers me. And itโs not that we should settle or stop fighting to improve things. Of course I want a cleaner Camagรผey, and I hope that the authorities and all of us do our part. But in the meantime, am I going to give away my inner peace to every trash bin I find? There lies the key to personal growth, at least for me: learning to see without ceasing to act, and acting from clarity, not from chronic indignation.
Since yesterday I have been wearing my magic glasses, and I have been testing them on everything: on the news that makes me angry, on the comments of people who criticize without reason, on my own fiercely selfโcritical thoughts. Itโs not that I ignore the problems, but I decide not to let them occupy my entire field of vision. I look for the spark of kindness, the small beauty, the hidden lesson, and I swear it works.
I invite you to get your own magic glasses. You just have to train your gaze to rest on what does you good, without denying the rest but without giving it the power to ruin your walk. Because sometimes life resembles those downtown streets: it has trash bins and bougainvillea, and itโs up to us to choose where we point the camera. And I, after this walk, choose the flowers.
