Last night, as the fan stopped for the umpteenth time and the heat began to take over the room, I found myself writing to a friend who lives on the other side of the map. I donโt know if it was the exhaustion, the sudden darkness, or that accumulation of difficult days that sometimes weighs more than the very air of my Camagรผey. The thing is, I poured my heart out and told him about the blackouts that never give warning, about prices rising as if in a hurry, about that uncertainty that sneaks into every corner and sometimes seems like itโs about to win.
He, who has known me since before things got this tough, stopped me cold, not with a lecture but with a mirror. He said he didnโt want to see me like that, complaining, defeated, that I was one of those who always finds something good, who looks for light even at the bottom of the well. He reminded me who I am when Iโm not only looking at the cracks.
At first I got angry, because how can I not complain when day-to-day life sometimes feels like an obstacle race with no medals? But then I took a deep breath and knew he was right, that in the middle of the storm I had forgotten my own superpower: seeing things differently.
So I promised him I would keep trying and that I wouldnโt give in to fatigue, which is why I want to write this as a pact with myself and with anyone who needs to read it.
Looking for light is not denying the shadow; it is knowing that blackouts force us to sit together on porches, to tell stories in the dark, to rediscover that the neighbor is not a stranger but an ally. Looking for light means understanding that when prices hurt, we learn to value small things: a shared mango, a patiently made coffee, a hug that costs nothing and is worth everything. Looking for light also means facing uncertainty and, instead of freezing, remembering that it is also the fertile ground where possibilities grow.
Last night, after hanging up, I lit a candle. It wasnโt much light, but it was enough to see my daughterโs smile on the other side of the bed and to realize that the fan would spin again, that this country has taught us to be resilient without ceasing to be gentle, and that beauty is not always in what is big, but in what we choose to see.
Here I am, writing this as the sun begins to peek outside, with the same problems as always, yes, but with a new decision: to hunt for light like someone searching for hidden treasure, because if thereโs one thing about living in Cuba, itโs that when light appears, it feels brighter than anywhere else, and I want to keep being one of those who find it, always.
