I felt an immense need to turn to this community after receiving the gift of this book from a friend's hands. It's clear he knows my tastes so well that he brought me one of the poets who has most stirred my soul. Juan Gelman is one of those authors you must embrace with both hands, knowing we will touch his pain in every verse.

This anthology of Juan Gelman's poetry brings together, perhaps, the poems I once dreamed of writing when I was delirious with the idea of becoming a great poet. It is a collection of pains, of losses, but also of tenacious and obstinate hope.

alt

When I open the book, its first section delicately traverses his youthful poems, and their vitality is undeniable. I swear you can already tell from his beginnings that Gelman was not going to be a quiet poet, as his play with words, between the surreal and the colloquial, draws us into the bustling life of Buenos Aires. Even here, I could not yet find the poet of wrenching pain he would later become.

Then, as I advanced in my reading, savoring each page like delicate drops of blood, I encounter the breaking point, where he devastatingly delves into the disappearance of his son Marcelo and his pregnant daughter-in-law during the Argentine military dictatorship. Gelman makes us begin to mourn for his loved ones, a grief that, at times, also becomes our own. There lies the rage like a fist upon the paper, while the pain, his pain which is also ours, is crafted with words that scream.

alt

Without a doubt, one of the aspects that most fascinated me about this anthology is the constant dialogue it establishes with other poets and with history. It's as if he were sitting beside me, telling me the story, while in my mind, I build a monument with his memories, like an act of spiritual resistance. Gelman needs his verses as the purest evidence against oblivion.

And of course, the language of exile. This poet, instead of locking himself in nostalgia, is capable of opening up the language and reinventing Spanish, playing with words. A biography of Gelman I once read said that he felt torn from his land, and that is why he had to use his tongue as a free territory.

alt

You close this book, and after so much journeying through these pages, what remains with me is not just the impression of tragedy, but his obstinate faith in the word. Imagine, everything was taken from him, yet he never allowed himself to stray from creating beauty from the abyss.

My friend doesn't know the treasure he has given me. He doesn't know that I will spend days rereading Gelman, unable to stop myself, reading aloud some verses I already knew by heart:

If they let me choose, I would choose
this health of knowing we are very sick,
this joy of being so unhappy.

If they let me choose, I would choose
this love with which I hate,
this hope that eats desperate breads.

What happens here, sirs,
is that I'm staking my life.

alt

This anthology, more than pleasing me, confronted me, pained me, kept me awake, and now when I look at it again, I see it as the house of a ghost I have invited to stay by my side, as a reminder that poetry may be the highest form of truth and survival.

Until the next book!

Si me dieran a elegir, yo elegirรญa

Si me dieran a elegir, yo elegirรญa
este amor con que odio,
esta esperanza que come panes desesperados.

Aquรญ pasa, seรฑores,
que me juego la muerte.

alt
