At four in the morning, in the small control room, a security guard named Harry was asleep in his chair. He was a man with sixty years of experience, which explained his graying hair and overly loose uniform.

He woke from his slumber, yawning and stretching his arms. Being the night-shift security guard at the city’s Natural History Museum wasn’t exactly a movie adventure.

Routine nights consisted of staring at a wall filled with monitors, drinking black coffee, and battling boredom for eight hours. Most of the time, he spent the majority of his night shift sleeping in the surveillance room.

The first thing Harry did after waking up was check the security cameras: the museum halls, filled with dinosaur skeletons, lunar rocks, and a special exhibition of priceless relics and Renaissance artwork. Everything was fine; everything was completely silent. It was an extremely demanding job because of the responsibility it entailed.

It was another peaceful day. However, as he often told himself in the early hours of the morning: “Someone had to do it.” Because the risk of leaving such a large place, so full of history, at the mercy of the night was too high—like leaving the refrigerator open in a house full of mice.

The following night, in the middle of his shift, Harry closed his eyes and said:

“Just for a minute,” almost whispering to himself.

That minute quickly turned into a deep nap, and it was that night that the risk everyone talked about was about to become a reality.

A plain white van parked behind the museum. A couple of men emerged from it, carrying specialized equipment. They quietly made their way inside, bypassing the security systems. Within minutes, they reached the Renaissance art gallery and prepared to get their hands on the paintings on display.

In the surveillance room, a red light began flashing on the main console. It was the silent alarm for the Art Pavilion, which had been activated to alert the security guard in the control room.

Harry woke with a start. Disoriented, he accidentally knocked over his coffee cup, spilling it across the desk. He quickly rubbed his eyes and leaned toward the monitors, squinting at the screens. His eyes widened when he saw shadows moving on monitor number four. He knew what it meant: intruders. He adjusted the monitor’s contrast and zoomed in for a better view.

A couple of men dressed in black and wearing dark ski masks held priceless works of art in their hands. They stood directly in front of the pavilion’s central display case. The robbery was unfolding right before his eyes.

“This can’t be happening! And it had to happen on my shift!” Harry said aloud to himself.

The heaviness of sleep vanished, replaced by anxiety.

His sweaty fingers moved across the control panel as he typed a password into the computer. He lifted the transparent plastic cover protecting a huge red button. It controlled the emergency lockdown system, something he had never used until that night.

“I hope this works...” he said nervously as he pressed the button firmly.

The building’s actual alarms began sounding throughout the museum. The intruders tried to run toward the exit of the art gallery, but it was already too late. Heavy metal gates descended from the ceiling, sealing every exit.

The thieves were trapped. Harry watched them pound on the armored steel from the comfort of the surveillance room.

“Hahaha. I can’t believe it—it worked!” he laughed happily.

Calmly, the old guard picked up the phone and dialed the emergency number.

“Hello, police? There are some thieves in the Natural History Museum...”

Half an hour later, the police arrived at the crime scene. While waiting, Harry made himself another coffee and watched the defeated thieves lying on the floor through the cameras.

Once the officers were in position, Harry deactivated the doors, and the police entered to take the thieves to prison without any trouble.

The officer in charge approached Harry while his men escorted the handcuffed criminals to the patrol cars.

“I have to congratulate you. You caught these ruffians and handled the situation all by yourself,” the officer said as he firmly shook Harry’s hand.

Harry smiled proudly, adjusted his uniform, and replied:

“It’s a difficult job, but someone had to do it.”
