Long ago a fateful day changed a person for the better, turning back the clock, the memories of those days tell the story of a kind boy who wanted to make a friend, but an unexpected twist granted him the lesson of his life.

Curt was known in the neighborhood as a generous-hearted child. At the age of thirteen, he came across a stray dog wandering the neighborhood, suddenly and without fuss, seeking shelter under parked cars.

This dog was as white as jasmine, his dirty coat and melancholy eyes reflected a murky past, one full of mysteries that no one could ever imagine.

Seeing him in such a state immediately captured Curt's attention. Without further thought, he decided to take him home. He named him Chester, a cheerful sounding name, as he wished his new friend's new life to be.

“It's going to be okay buddy,” he told him as he stroked his head.

Curt was excited, he was looking forward to having a pet.
He filled one bowl with fresh water and another with kibble. He sat near Chester, tried to play with him, threw him a ball every now and then and just petted his head.

But the dog seemed distant, as if he had a great regret in his heart, something from his mysterious past kept him from any kind of joy.

Curt's every attempt was met with a blank stare, a subtle tail wag that could be read as a polite gesture.

The weeks passed in the blink of an eye, and Curt continued his routine. Each morning, upon awakening, he would run to the yard to see if his beloved Chester had eaten. Often he would find him huddled in a corner, looking lost in longing, as if pondering. Curt would talk to him, but he wouldn't listen, yet he would recurrently tell him stories about his life.

Chester was a very quiet and indifferent dog, yet Curt did not give up easily.

He knew that building a friendship took time, so he continued to try to gain Chester's trust. He tried to take him for walks without success, showed him new toys and tried to get him to play, but the dog always preferred to lie there watching nothing.

Although he didn't seem to hate Curt, there was a silent barrier between them that the boy didn't know how to break.

At the one-month mark, one morning when Curt woke up, he realized that the dog was no longer in the yard. His heart sank. He frantically searched the neighborhood, just in case Chester happened to be hiding somewhere.

“Has anyone seen Chester?” he asked himself.

Curt went out to ask the neighbors if they had seen his friend. But no one had seen the dog. Despair began to take hold of him. Curt went through the streets and alleys, shouting Chester's name without receiving any response. His pet had disappeared...

As the days passed, though he continued to search, Curt began to understand that sometimes love was not enough. That brought a deep sadness to his heart. He felt rejected, as if his efforts to help had been in vain.

One day, while Curt was walking in the park, he saw a group of children playing with their dogs. The laughter and happy barking echoed in his heart. Closing his eyes, he remembered Chester and the day he left; that fateful day and what he had tried to do for him.

In that moment of reflection, he understood that sometimes there are beings in the world who carry stories that cannot be shared, wounds that cannot be healed, and that doesn't necessarily speak of rejection.

Later, Curt decided to stop looking for Chester: not because he had given up hope, but because he had learned that freedom is also a gift.

It was a mystery to him what had become of Chester, perhaps he had found a place where he felt comfortable, a place where he could forget his sorrows.

With a sad smile, Curt would drop a piece of food in the yard every time he went out, that custom became a tribute to his friend, hoping that, somewhere in the world, Chester might feel fulfilled.

Months later, Curt moved on, caring for other animals in need in a selfless way, learning to give without expecting anything in return.

And always keeping in mind the story of that white dog on
his heart, he understood that true love sometimes means letting go at the right time despite misfortunes.
