The sunlight of an ordinary Friday filtered through the window when the alarm went off on the nightstand. In his bed, a man named Duval opened his eyes heavily and stretched his limbs. Insomnia had given him pronounced dark circles under his eyes, and although he was sleepy, sheer willpower made him get up in a hurry so he wouldn’t be late for the office.

He left the room half-dressed and headed for the bathroom. As he placed his foot on the first step of the staircase, he slipped. He leaned forward, and before he could react, the air was knocked from his lungs. In less than a minute, his vision was fixed on the floor, and the shock made his skin prickle. Before he hit the ground, a surge of adrenaline clenched his stomach and snapped his eyes wide open.

He was lying in his bed. The same alarm was ringing. Golden light streamed through the window...

Disoriented, Duval got out of bed and looked around his room, thinking it had all been a nightmare. He took a deep breath, turned off the alarm, and went down the stairs one step at a time, this time gripping the handrail firmly.

He managed to make it out onto the street, but after walking only a couple of blocks, the toes of his shoes caught on his untied shoelaces. He lost his balance, his hands desperately searched for something to grab in midair, and the sidewalk rushed toward him at full speed. The fright lasted only an instant as he imagined smashing his head against the concrete. However... He blinked, and once again he was staring at the ceiling of his room, with the alarm ringing on his nightstand.

“Huh? But... what the hell...?” he couldn’t help saying aloud.

Duval’s confusion made him pinch his cheek repeatedly. What he was experiencing was no dream. He stood up beside the mattress. He needed to find out whether he was going insane or whether the day was truly repeating itself. He looked behind him, took a breath to suppress his fear, and let his body fall onto the wooden floor.

In the middle of the fall, he opened his eyes in bed. The clock showed the same time as when he had first woken up... He had really gone back in time.

Duval spent the entire day experimenting. Apparently, he had acquired a superpower. He discovered that it wasn’t fear that triggered the reset, but tripping or letting himself fall to the ground. After countless resets in which he analyzed the limits of his new ability, he understood the phenomenon’s exact boundaries. Technically, he mastered it completely in a single day, but from his perspective, it had been months and months of literal daily training.

The following afternoon, Duval felt the need to reveal his secret to a close friend named Jason, his only trusted friend. They met at a café.

They sat beside the large window. Without wasting any time, Duval leaned across the table and stated the truth outright.

“You’re not going to believe this, but for some reason I can’t understand, I can now travel through time.”

Jason looked at him over the rim of his coffee cup and gave him a mocking smile.

“What? Don’t joke around. That’s impossible.”

“I’m serious. Every time I trip or fall to the ground, I return to the beginning of the day, precisely to the moment I woke up,” Duval said insistently.

Noticing how serious the conversation was, Jason set his coffee cup on the table and sighed while shaking his head.

“That sounds like a dream. I told you insomnia would drive you crazy.”

It was obvious that such a declaration was difficult to believe without solid proof. Duval could do nothing but talk about it.

“I thought the same thing, but this is real. Yesterday, I reset the day many times. Then I wondered what would happen if twenty-four hours passed without me tripping. That’s how I discovered that this power only works within a single day. In other words, if I wake up on Friday and trip on Saturday, I’ll wake up on Saturday morning.”

After he finished speaking, there was a long silence. His companion gave no immediate response. His friend stared at him with grave concern.

“Hey, Duval... I think you should see a psychiatrist,” Jason said seriously.

Hearing this, Duval let out a deep sigh filled with bitter resignation, as though it had come from a journey far too long.

“It doesn’t matter how many times we have this conversation... You simply don’t believe me,” he said, folding his arms.

“I think you hit your head and now you’re crazy,” Jason commented.

“I have no way to prove that I’m telling you the truth, so I give up... I’ll deal with this on my own.”

Without giving him time to respond, Duval rose from his seat. He pushed the chair back and, keeping his eyes fixed on his astonished friend’s face, let himself fall forward.

The jolt sent him back onto the mattress. Once again, he was in his room on Saturday morning. Duval stared at the ceiling of his bedroom, exhausted by the prolonged repetition of the day. He settled beneath the sheets, closed his eyes, and decided to go to sleep.

No bromees.
