Hello, fans of great music. It’s Tuesday again, so that means it’s time to talk about music from the past—the good stuff. This time, I wanted to share a specially curated playlist from one of my all-time favorite Alternative Rock bands. But before I continue, I’d like to remind you, as always, that this little special is brought to you thanks to the weekly contest held in the Music community by our colleague 
The band I’ll be talking about today is none other than U2, an Irish band formed in the mid-70s that has been popular from the ’80s right up to the present day. Initially, U2 started out playing Post-Punk, but as the decades went by, the band decided to change their musical style, evolving into something more alternative and eventually settling on a softer, more Pop-oriented sound today. Personally, I first discovered this band during their alternative phase, which spanned from the early 2000s to 2010.

La banda de la que les hablaré hoy es nada más ni nada menos que U2, una agrupación musical irlandesa formada a mediados de los años 70 y popularizada desde los años 80 hasta la época actual. Inicialmente, U2 empezó tocando Post-Punk, pero con el paso de las décadas, la banda decidió cambiar su estilo de música, evolucionando a algo más alternativo y terminando con un sonido más Pop y suave al día de hoy. Let’s start with one of the first singles that propelled the Irish band to worldwide fame in the mid-1980s. It’s also one of the first U2 singles I ever heard back in my preteen years, when I first began to learn all about this amazing genre. “With or Without You” is the first single from their fifth studio album, The Joshua Tree (1987), one of the band’s most popular albums. Back then, U2 still had a solid sound typical of the Rock genre.
“With or Without You” speaks to the duality of love, specifically about a romantic relationship experienced by the speaker, who describes that person as someone who “see the stone set in your eyes, see the thorn twist in your side.” This phrase can be interpreted as a metaphor comparing the feelings he has for that person to a heavy stone or a thorn. The rest of the lyrics go on to describe, in a somewhat ambiguous, simple, yet emotional way, what our protagonist feels when he is both close to and far from her.
One of the phrases that is repeated throughout this song is the following: “I can’t live with or without you.” This perfectly captures the duality our narrator experiences in his feelings and life with the person he is supposed to love. Some of us may have felt the same way about someone special in our lives. The song has a progressive rhythm, starting off gently and ending powerfully and resonantly. The next song is another great single that has managed to sink deep into my subconscious—from my preteen years right up to today—in a clear and deeply nostalgic way. It’s a very emotional song that defined an entire era, one that I remember and miss with quite a bit of melancholy. “Beautiful Day” is the first single from the band’s tenth studio album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000). That’s right—with this song, we’re taking a huge leap forward of nearly two decades, and we can also hear an evolution in the Irish band’s sound and melody.
The lyrics of “Beautiful Day” speak to the positivity and optimism the narrator seeks to convey about life. The song begins by speaking to each listener’s heart with the image of a flower trying to bloom in rocky ground: “no room to rent in this city,” “you’re out of luck, and the reason that you had to care.” We can interpret this as the reality we all face in daily life, where we don’t always have luck, space, or a reason for anything at all, and it’s hard to find a “good companion” to help us move forward.
However, all of this changes when we reach the song’s chorus, which invites us to see the “beautiful day” we have every day. To look at the sky, the birds, the fields, and everything around us with joyful, carefree eyes. In short, the song invites us to see the world, life, and our day-to-day in the “most beautiful” way possible, even with all those things that spoil the view or dampen our joy every day. The song’s rhythm and melody serve as the perfect accompaniment to everything the lyrics aim to convey.
La siguiente canción es otro gran sencillo que logró calar en lo más profundo de mi subconsciente desde preadolescente hasta la fecha de hoy de una manera clara y muy nostálgica. Una canción bastante emotiva que ha marcado toda una época de la cual recuerdo y extraño con bastante melancolía. Beautiful Day es el primer sencillo del décimo álbum de estudio de la banda titulado All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000). Así es, aquí damos un salto enorme de casi dos décadas con esta canción, notando también una evolución en el sonido y la melodía de la banda irlandesa.
La letra de Beautiful Day habla del positivismo y optimismo que busca transmitirnos el interlocutor para con la vida. La canción inicia dirigiéndose al corazón de cada uno con la descripción de una flor que intenta brotar en un terreno pedregoso, “sin espacio para alquilar en esta ciudad”, “you're out of luck, and the reason that you had to care”. To wrap up this excellent list of U2 songs, I couldn’t think of a better way to do it than with my favorite song by this great Irish band. I’m not lying when I say that what I feel for this song is something I’ve never felt for any other song in my entire life. For me, it’s the best song I’ve ever heard from their ENTIRE discography. “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” is the third single from their twelfth studio album, No Line on the Horizon (2009). I first discovered the song through the famous animated music video that was airing on MTV back then.
That music video—which I highly recommend you watch above—is one of the best I’ve ever seen in my entire life. But it’s thanks to this song that I came to recognize U2’s incredible talent. “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” is my favorite song, and not only that, but it’s been with me since I was a preteen. The song speaks to us about human duality and how even the purest and kindest being will always need its negative counterpart as a complement. It also speaks to us about change—not just of an entire society or an entire generation, but of each individual—with the following line: “A change of heart comes slow.”
Then there’s the beautiful and unforgettable chorus: “It’s not a hill, it’s a mountain, as you start out the climb.” This first part of the chorus speaks to how life’s difficulties and the very weaknesses we have—which prevent us from changing—are like a mountain, even though we might tell ourselves it’s just a small hill we need to get over. The lyrics of this song are well worth listening to and understanding because of everything they convey. Its melody—blending the heavy Alternative Rock that defined the band at that time with a somewhat Pop-influenced rhythm—serves as the perfect complement.
Para finalizar esta excelente lista de canciones de U2 no encontré una mejor manera de hacerlo que con mi canción favorita de esta gran banda irlandesa. No miento cuando digo que lo que siento por esta canción es algo que nunca antes he llegado a sentir por otra canción en toda mi vida. Para mí, es la mejor canción que he escuchado de TODA su discografía. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight es el tercer sencillo del duodécimo álbum de estudio titulado No Line on the Horizon (2009). La canción la llegué a conocer por el famoso videoclip animado que se emitía en MTV en aquel entonces.
Dicho videoclip, que les recomiendo encarecidamente que vean arriba, es de los mejores que he visto en toda mi vida. Pero es gracias a esta canción que llegué a reconocer el grandioso talento que tiene U2. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight es mi canción favorita y no solo eso, sino que ha estado conmigo desde que era un preadolescente. La canción nos habla de la dualidad humana y de cómo hasta el ser más puro y bondadoso siempre va a necesitar su contraparte negativa como complemento. También nos habla del cambio, no solo de toda una sociedad o de toda una generación, sino de cada quien con la siguiente frase: “A change of heart comes slow”.
Luego tenemos el hermoso e inolvidable coro: “It's not a hill, it's a mountain, as you start out the climb”.
