The (in)convenience of memories (ESP/ ENG)

The (in)convenience of memories
But we don't always have the possibility of “erasing the tape” or having a selective memory. We don't always take the happiest and most pleasant moments, the most colorful and brilliant ones, from the trunk of memories. Blessed are those who only remember the good things in life. Sometimes, through a mechanism that many have studied, a random element, sometimes unrelated, triggers a dark, sad memory that happened a long time ago and that we even thought we had forgotten. For example, rain can remind us of a landslide, but also of a childhood romance.
What's more, even without being asked, the memories of those days come back unstoppably when I hear the name of a medication or the word chemotherapy, when I see a young man with a basketball walking down the sidewalks of the neighborhood, when night simply falls. Of course, many times I would like to forget everything and not feel so much pain again, to be able to sleep peacefully and not ask myself so many questions that no longer make sense.
In fact, I often find myself needing to replace or chase away those sad memories when I see them turning into a spiral, an endless loop, a labyrinth with no way out. Do I succeed? Sometimes yes, often no: because those memories, more than the past, are the present.
I once read that animals and humans remember for survival: they have to remember to ensure their existence. I believe that human beings sometimes forget for the same reason: going through a painful event over and over again can be exhausting and even deadly. For my part, I sell sad memories due to lack of space....
