Three men came for him. Mom was in the kitchen, he was in the living room, and I was in my bedroom, playing. There was a knock at the door, and—as always, like someone with nothing to hide and nothing to fear—Dad opened it without asking who they were or what they wanted. Upon entering, they revealed their weapons and asked him to come with them. Mom came out then and asked where they were taking him, but Dad told her to calm down, that he would be back soon, and that it was all just a mistake. That was when I stepped out of my room and saw my father’s face—as well as my mother’s and the three men’s—taking in every detail, just in case I ever needed to recognize them again.

There were three of them: two tall, thin men and one heavy-set man of medium height. All three were in plainclothes—no uniforms—though Dad was told they were police officers. I watched them get into a gray car with visible license plates and tinted windows. From the car, Dad saw my mother and me crying—for the last time, though neither he nor we knew then that it would be the last.
That was the last time I saw Dad, but not the men; their faces haunted my nightmares. I knew what they looked like, the car they drove, their build and height. Later, I learned their names, their occupations, and where they lived. It wasn't easy to find out about them or get close to them, but time was on my side. No one grows suspicious of someone they see only once a year, by chance, out on the street.

o0o

I approached them unnoticed—gently, kindly, patiently—like a hunter stalking prey. To the one who loved animals, I spoke of dogs; to the one who loved to drink, I offered a glass. All three, just as I had planned, fell into a trap of kisses and embraces; they saw only the woman in me and forgot the child. Filled with delight, all three confessed: the assignment, the accidental death, their own clumsiness, my father’s bad luck. What they never confessed was where they had left his body. Just as I will never confess where I left theirs.
