En la vigésima edición del Campeonato Sudamericano de Fútbol SUB17, la selección de Venezuela, al quedar en la segunda posición del grupo B de dicho torneo, obtuvo su calificación al Mundial de Fútbol SUB 17 a disputarse en Catar este mismo año entre los meses de octubre y noviembre; esta es la segunda clasificación de manera consecutiva que consigue la Vinotinto juvenil, pero en esta oportunidad es la primera vez que la calificación se obtiene de manera directa.

La selección SUB 17 en una primera fase en donde enfrentó a selecciones como Bolivia, Ecuador, Brasil y Uruguay (en ese orden) tuvo una participación que fue de mayor a menor; en dónde pudo demostrar diferentes facetas en sus dos primeros encuentros como fue la ansiedad y convicción, siendo esa última lo que creo que impulsó al equipo a superar el nervioso en su estreno en el torneo y que los impulsó a obtener dos importantes victorias que lo posicionaron en un lugar privilegiado para la clasificación; lamentablemente la ansiedad hizo aparición nuevamente al enfrentar al tetracampeón del torneo y junto al desgaste físico, hizo aparición la desconcentración para recibir el primer gol del torneo y caer derrotados; creo que el estar cerca de la clasificación fue algo que posiblemente afectó a los muy jóvenes jugadores y no pudieron lidiar con esa presión, pero todavía quedaba una oportunidad y era contra la selección de Uruguay que se encontraba última del grupo con tan solo un punto sumado
El encuentro de la última jornada del grupo B, Venezuela se enfrentó a una selección de Uruguay que está herida, selección que se sintió perjudicada por decisiones arbitrales en anteriores encuentros, pero que mantenía el sueño de una posible clasificación y eso solo podía lograrlo con una victoria sobre la Vinotinto; eso lo entendió muy bien la selección celeste (que en esta oportunidad vistió de blanco) e hizo todo lo posible para obtener esa importante victoria, pero creo que cometió un grave error el cual fue subestimar a la selección de Venezuela y esto lo digo porque primeramente con un gol de más en el marcador, tuvo oportunidades de finiquitar el encuentro, pero de esas oportunidades perdidas, La Vinotinto vio que todavía había esperanza la cual se obtuvo en tiempo de descuento de tan importante juego para sumar un punto más y así ser parte de un nuevo mundial juvenil.

In the last match of the last day of group B, Venezuela faced a Uruguay team that is injured, a team that felt harmed by refereeing decisions in previous matches, but that kept the dream of a possible classification and that could only be achieved with a victory over the Vinotinto; This was well understood by the sky-blue team (which in this opportunity was dressed in white) and did everything possible to get that important victory, but I think they made a serious mistake which was to underestimate the Venezuelan team and I say this because first with an extra goal on the scoreboard, they had opportunities to finish the game, but of those missed opportunities, La Vinotinto saw that there was still hope which was obtained in injury time of such an important game to add one more point and thus be part of a new youth world cup.
Está selección ahora dirigida por Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, pasa a la historia por alcanzar ese logro de ser la primera selección venezolana en clasificar de manera directa a un mundial de fútbol; este equipo conformado por jugadores que son parte de clubes venezolanos y que está siendo dirigido por un staff técnico de venezolanos, hago acotación a la nacionalidad porque es el tema de moda en la prensa deportiva venezolana así como en las redes sociales, un debate u opinión que no ayudan porque al final este equipo por completo está en pleno crecimiento, se está desarrollando y se nota cuando entrenadores fallan en ciertas decisiones en el momento del juego, así como el de transmitir calma y exigir concentración a jugadores jóvenes que están en pleno desarrollo futbolístico, pero aparte de todo eso, creo que Vizcarrondo y su equipo, también desean dar herramientas a sus jugadores para que puedan crecer y entender una manera de jugar, algo que puedan usar en su joven carrera y les haga ser mejores en el futuro, en eso creo y espero que se siga trabajando, que no se quede en una opinión vacía, nada constructiva, ni mucho menos crítica, que sepan qué hay que mejorar porque en el mundo actual del fútbol, la edad de estos jugadores es muy importante para captar la atención de diferentes equipos, es por eso que hay que aprovechar este tiempo, para así hacer una selección competitiva que funcione como influencia o umbral a superar para los nuevos jugadores.
