Hank reigned in his horse at the entrance to Carver's Canyon and took a drink from his dusty canteen.
The sun was low in the sky and the light hitting the rock walls made the shades of red and yellow pop like a finely woven tapestry. It would be nightime soon.
Hank was hunting a very dangerous animal, a prey much deadlier than a grizzly and meaner than a rattle snake.
Dane "the mad dog" Bartlett and 2 of his cronies had robbed a stage coach, killing the drivers and 3 passengers.
The desperados had entered the canyon not too long ago to hide out and divy up the stolen silver.
Hank realized that the badmen would be prepared for a tussle and they had him outnumbered 3 to 1.
Those odds sounded just about right to Hank. He loosened the lever action rifle in the scabbard, clucked to his horse to proceed and entered into the box canyon.
"Their backs against the wall" he smiled to himself "I've got em surrounded"
