Inuke's Blog Writing Contest #2: - My Greed that gave me a good punishment
Even though we try to be extremely careful of the scammers there are times when we get caught in to their web. I have always been careful of not clicking on any links that come through. There have been instances where I have almost landed myself into trouble and luckily got saved. But there was one instance which just blew me off. It was not an online scam, but the one that happened in real, in person with me.
I am not a person who gambles with my money. This was when I travelled to Paris and one evening, I was at one of the streets where there were some street games. I was looking at them for a while and I thought it was easy. It was guessing the number under the glass. They would roll the dice and cover it with a glass and then one had to guess the number.
There was a group of people, I would observe them and they got some wins, so after a time I got lured into playing it. The amount at stake was starting from 10 euros. I played 10 and won my first shot, after that I got greedy and played 20 and won that one too. So, then I played 50 and I lost, in disappointment I played another 50 and lost again and like that without realization and in pursuit of getting the lost money I played 200 euros and lost all, and then I was hit with this realization that I was being stupid. I was almost crying losing out that big money.
Later when I was just about to leave the place, I observed the same set of people coming back together and shouting oh yes I won, I won, and then some other strangers like me getting lured, would win the first 2 rounds and keep losing. The pattern was same. Then I started to observe very closely the movement of the dice under the glass and I realized that they were manipulating. At one point I even noticed that the right one fell and they swiftly changed it and I shouted this is cheating and those guys tried to silence me out asking me to leave the place.
Though I made a big scene, but nothing much that I could do. They were a big clan and I was alone, so after a point I thought it would be wise to leave the place rather than getting into more trouble.
When I got back to my room, I was miserable and I could not believe my stupidity. I would never ever do that, but I did it here. It was a big lesson for me.
These scammers are there everywhere around, online and in real as well. Online has increased a lot now. It is best to be safe and not keep downloading unnecessary stuff.
Since the time I have landed in Mumbai, I have been receiving these constant messages from different numbers mentioning that my Pan card details are not updated in my account and I need to update clicking on the link provided else my account will freeze. It was instantly that I knew it was a scam, because bank messages come with bank codes and not from individual numbers. But these guys are so well advancing in their frauds that maybe they will hack that part as well someday.
