It was a sweltering September day. Air conditioners buzzed through the city streets, lazily dripping condensation. But it was the geometric shadow that caught my eye first, forcing me to stop and examine this phenomenon. How many air conditioners have you seen locked inside a metal cage?I certainly haven't. Mine lives completely free on my balcony wall.
My goodness! What would your guess be?Perhaps the cage protects it from birds or theft, since it sits about three to four meters high. The sun, shining directly at the wall, turned the grate into a kind of stencil, projecting the bulky, three-dimensional structure onto the flat, rough surface of the facade. The shadow created an incredibly sharp and mesmerizing geometric pattern.
An air conditioner is built to bring coolness and freshness, yet it gets hidden behind bars out of fear of damage. On my way home, I couldn't help but think how fiercely people build similar, heavy metal cages around their own hearts. We try so hard to shield our feelings from the vandalism, indifference, or theft of others. We trick ourselves into believing that these bars keep us safe. But the sun of truth always exposes reality: by protecting ourselves from the outside world, we merely project the shadow of that cage onto our entire lives. And in the end, the shadow of fear grows larger, louder, and darker than the very thing we tried so jealously to hide.
Sure, one can choose to give up freedom for the sake of safety. But iron armor does more than just block incoming blows—it blocks the light from finding its way in.Our capacity to love, trust, and live authentically craves open space and a constant circulation of feelings. By locking ourselves within the boundaries of our fears, we might keep the mechanism intact, but we cut off the oxygen to our own souls. A defense that turns into a prison no longer protects—it confines.
That is my philosophical shadow for today.
