Hello friends of Womentribe, I hope you are doing well!
In recent days, I've seen the news about the rape of a girl—brutally aggressive and involving a process that has really not been favorable to her as a victim. Once again, the topic of rape is brought to the table, especially because, time and again, the victim ends up being blamed due to various motives linked to machismo, as well as the erroneous idea surrounding consensual sexual acts and the fact that the victim did not seek to end up in such a situation.

I haven't read too much about the case; it causes me a lot of rage and anxiety. I feel it is a great injustice that so many years have passed and the perpetrators simply continued with their lives as if nothing had happened. And that makes it much murkier—there was a formal complaint, but it was set aside because the victim admitted to having used drugs, something that has nothing to do with the traumatic situation she had to endure. That small detail allowed them to decide to view that traumatic event as something "she asked for."

No person, whether man or woman, has any right to abuse and mistreat another simply because such a dreadful situation brings them pleasure or excitement. It is not something that is sought out; it is not the fault of her clothing, nor because she was there surrounded by men, nor is it her fault for being under the influence of drugs. Nothing justifies abuse against a person; whoever commits this act is simply a sick individual who has likely done this repeatedly or possesses no remorse whatsoever.

That is why there are groups that try to support both men and women, but especially women, who tend to be more vulnerable because they do not have the same physical strength or ability to escape a situation like this. Among them, the word "feminism" is often mentioned, and I think that within this group of people there is a strong sense of unity. Even though I don't agree with everything they express, they certainly have been a source of help for those vulnerable women who find neither earthly justice nor support in their environment—a safe place to process what they went through.

What I think about this news is that it seems appalling to me that so much time passed while the perpetrators went on with their lives as if nothing had happened. As if the matter had been the product of a slip-up or the fault of combining alcohol with drugs, when there is a detail where they filmed the victim and encouraged other men to also continue abusing her. It is horrific what this girl lived through, and she will likely have to go to therapy for a long time to try to lead a reasonably normal life after this event.

Abuse of any kind has no justification; there is nothing that can be said to excuse someone who commits these acts, which are done with full awareness and malice. I hope the girl can obtain the justice that will bring her at least a little peace, though the invisible scars will remain until the last day of her life. It is sad, but it is a reality that can happen to anyone, and there should be laws that bring about real change, especially for the victim's protection. I do not agree with being a radical feminist, but I also cannot say that being surrounded by men can make a woman feel protected or comfortable, without worrying that something as atrocious as this could happen.
