Hi Needle Community. I want to share with you my few scraps creatures and my process. Since I usually end up with a bunch of different scraps from my sewing, and because I never get myself to throw them away, I decided to try to make some fantasy creatures.
First just lay down the pieces of materials that either have an interesting shape, pattern or texture, or pieces that go well together as contrasting colours.
Pin them down and play around until you start “seeing” body parts.
That’s the hardest part, so to speak, finding the base. Once you find the first pieces, it’s like a puzzle and more pieces will start to make sense placed a certain way.
Once you have them well pinned together, all you need to do it either glue them or sew, depending on the surface you want them on.
I chose a very thick A3 paper and to give it a more personal feel, I hand sew my first piece. Paper is not the best material to sew on, as you need to be extra careful but I just love how my hand sewing looks like, because it’s messy and it’s like punching my inner critic in the face. When it comes to creating stuff, I often find myself that I hate what I made, either because they are not “perfect” or too boring. But little by little I have learned to just trust the process and accept it as it is.
So these are my pieces out of scraps and mixed-media:
I entitled this one, “Dancing in the rain” and it’s my favorite. I gave him his lovely boots and sown the rain with thread.
The back turned out quite neat also.
Then I have the “There’s always a bigger fish”.
I sewn by machine because I wanted that zig-zag effect for the waves. This piece was inspired from a strategy game I play where there's this common phrase used, the difference between play-to-win and free-to-play more like. And I love the way it turned out also.
Then we have “The fancy bird”:
And lastly “The flame lady”. The last two are just glued.
So from those big pieces of scraps I got multiple little bits of them, and those will probably turn some other time into more weird creatures.
I hope to have made someone to create some beautiful weird fantasy animals instead of throwing away those precious scraps.
