This is my post for #freewriters Thursday prompt everything is settled hosted by @mariannewest
My Mom had a stroke in August 2020, she passed away on August 30, 2021. She had a house here, a small piece of land in another state, and 2 lots in north Florida that over 25 years ago she told me that she could not pay the taxes on. I told her that I would pay the taxes for her. I paid the taxes for her for 5 years before she told me that I could have them. I have been paying the taxes for over 25 years now but we never put them in my name. 3 days before her stroke, she told me that we needed to do it, I told her to make the appointment. It never happened.
One of my sisters hired an attorney that is on the west coast, we are on the east coast. They will not return my calls or answer my e-mails. I can not get out of the sister that hired them as to what is going on. Now she is telling me that they will not be filing for the probate until she has been gone for 2 years. She says the attorney told her that if the people that Mom owed money to have not filed any claim in 2 years then they can not collect. Meaning they can not take the house or her land for her debt to them.
Now someone is telling me that If I do not file a claim on the 2 lots, then my claim to them will also go away and they will be sold and the money split between us. I want to hire an attorney but my husband says no, he is thinking of the money that it will cost and he says the lots are not worth anything because they are called campgrounds and you can not build on them. I want to keep them because my mom gave them to me. I will be happy when everything is settled. I really need to make a will so my kids do not go through this.
