This is my post for #freewriters Monday Prompt hand tools hosted by @mariannewest
For a commercial fisherman, the hand tool that I am holding in the above photo is a necessary tool. It is called a de-hooker, it is better and faster to use one of these. Better because your hands are not trying to hold a hook with a strong flopping fish flying everywhere. You still need to watch the second hook that is flying around with the fish, but it is still safer.
I made this de-hooker from a piece of thin round metal about 20 inches long. We used them to hold our clam bags on the bottom of the river. I bent one end in a U shape and the other end I ran through a net cork and bent it to stay, I did this because I was tired of dropping them overboard.
Once I get the fish in the boat, I grab the line above the hooks and wrap it one time around my hand.
Now I slide the bent end of the de-hooker toward the hook and stop when it gets to the bend in the hook.
I pull up on the hand tool "aka" de-hooker* and down and out with the hand with the line wrapped around it.
And he/she falls off.
I fished today and caught my first and only fish within the first 5 minutes of my first anchoring. I remembered to turn on my go pro camera and when I was going through the video I cut pictures and thought about making my post about my de-hooker now I saw the prompt and knew that was what I was going to write about it. It is funny to me how that worked out and thought I would share it with you.
