Neighbors play a crucial role in the daily lives of Cubans for many reasons: first, because we live so close to one another—they’re right next door—and, just as importantly, because they’re always on the lookout for everything that’s going on around them.

Los vecinos juegan un papel trascendental en la vida diaria de los cubanos, por muchos factores: uno, la cercanía de convivencia; los tenemos muy cerca de nuestros hogares y, otro no menos importante, es lo pendiente que están de todo lo que acontece alrededor.

If you want the latest gossip, talk to them; if you want someone practically breathing down your neck, look no further than them.

Si quieres saber lo último en chisme, habla con ellos; si quieres tener a alguien prácticamente respirando en tus espaldas, búscalos a ellos.

But it’s not all bad; there are also very cooperative neighbors, always willing to help and lend a hand when needed.
