Our first night in our new apartment was fine. The atmosphere is cool and the place is spacious enough for our wards to move freely. Our direct neighbour is a young single man, in his late thirties. As at when we got to meet him, being the older occupant of the house, he was a cool dude.
As we brought our luggage in, he assisted with lifting some of the heavy things we brought over. It was a nice experience for us on the first day. Our direct neighbour is homely, we do not have to go fetch water from a distant place and the market and mall is Just by the corner.
We were woken up by a loud sound of music as early as 5:00 am. On a weekend when we ought to sleep till 8:00am. This seemed to be a new chapter we had to deal with. I was so angry. The only day I had to sleep and relax my nerves, who could be doing this? Playing such loud music.
My wife struggled to pull through the noise to still observe the remaining three hours of sleep but it wasn't just working. I had to go around the estate to find the noise maker. On second thought, it's too early to begin to confront anyone since we've only parked for less than twenty-four hours.
By 8:23 am, my wife rose from the bed and all the children too. She didn't complain to me but I knew she had something in mind to say.
This had persisted three months ago. Before I knew that it was Tunde that was disturbing, it took time. If I had known, I would have made the move earlier to find out who this noise maker was.
I summoned courage for the first time to knock on his door. He opened and I saw the huge speaker in his living room. As I followed him from behind, he had such a thing for gadgets. The television screen covered the wall and the home theatre, the one that produced the noise that made me wake up earlier than planned on Saturday morning was just there staring at me.
Tunde came out with a bottle of Johnie Walker and a tumbler. He welcomed me to his home. I smiled in return as I poured for myself a half filled glass of gin.
I was beginning to find it difficult to present my case. Before I could clear my throat to begin my mission, the young man brought up the issue of Cristiano Ronaldo coming over to Manchester United. That was the discussion that took out half an hour.
Tunde is such a good guy. A neighbour I should be proud about. The chat took different dimensions and my anger disappeared with time.
It was meant to be a complaint and a mature way of asking an adult to manage the sound emitting from his electronic device but it turned out to be a friendly chit-chat.
Then, suddenly a beautiful lady emerged from his kitchen with a tray full of fried fish and pap. She knelt down and greeted me in the customary Nigerian way. I couldn't say much, not stare.
In my mind, I shouldn't be eating this because my wife too was in the kitchen preparing a weekend special for us too. But who am I to say no to the aroma of the red fried fish. I did it but left some space to take in my wife's meal too.
As I stood to walk out of the door and Tunde walking me out, I turned and told him:
Lest I forget, your sound system woke us up this morning. You should bring down the volume.
The remorse on his face showed that he was sorry.
Really? I am sorry sir. I will ensure it comes down forthwith.
That was how I managed the situation and we live here as brothers ever since.
