"I'm not a fan of the night shift, if I'm honest. I've got to stay awake all night."
This could have been a cushy little number. Being a security guard on the night shift means that I will not be that busy. It just means that I need to stay awake.
I could get myself a mini little telly or listen to the radio that is provided.
I have to go on patrol every two hours or so. Just routine. The good thing is that it helps me to keep awake.
If I'm honest, taking this job is a silly idea. The hours are long, very long. I spend more time here than I do at home.
In fact, it is total shit. I'd rather be skint than come here every day. This is not a life. Who wants to work 60 hours a week, day and night? Not me.
A phone call comes from an agency. A job starting tomorrow. Reasonable hours and decent pay. I'm going to quit the security job and take the new position.
I think most people would think that I'm a sensible person. But a month later I went crazy and quit this one too. I did some more crazy stuff, which is a whole different story.
"Why?"
That was the big question people were asking me. It was a question I was asking myself. Why did I not give a shit anymore? Was it the stuff I had been smoking for the past few years. I don't know.
As time goes by, I know exactly why I went down this road My life had no purpose. Everything I did felt like a dead end with no meaning. I just wasn't happy
Later that year, I enrolled to study for a course which would eventually lead to a degree. It was difficult, but I felt I had a goal in life. I eventually went on to do my teacher training.
Thankfully, after 13 years, I am still doing the job that I love.
