On the weekend, I had the opportunity to make a lightning trip to a small town in the state of Yucatan. where food, culture and history come together. I leave you a short story of said town.
Peanut is an ancient population. In the Mesoamerican Postclassic Period it was the seat of the Mayan dynasty of the Tutulxi. This moved its capital to Uxmal in the thirteenth century. Xiu was the dominant power of western Yucatan after the fall of Mayapán in 1441. An annual party in honor of the deity Kukulcán marked that event.
After being defeated by the Spaniards during the conquest of Yucatan, Batab Xiu ended up allying himself with the conqueror.
On July 12, 1562 the first bishop of Yucatan, Diego de Landa, organized in the city of Maní an Auto de fe, where a bonfire consumed codices and symbols of the Mayan gods, on the grounds that "they contained nothing but lies. of the Devil ".
The city has a Franciscan monastery that was built around 1549. The building was built with stones from pre-Columbian Mayan buildings. Inside there are some murals from the colonial era. The monastery has been the object of restoration since 2001.
