Today I would like to share with you the impression a book left on me. It was a very special book because my mother lent it to me.
From the very beginning, the book caught my attention, although I must admit that it was not exactly in perfect condition. Its cover was quite old and worn from the passage of time, so I had to handle it very carefully to avoid damaging it even further. However, that aged appearance somehow made me feel that I was holding a book that had already accompanied someone through many years.
The book is titled “Primero muerto…”, written by Justo E. Vasco and Daniel Chavarría, Cuban authors known for their crime fiction.
What is the book about?
The story revolves around an investigation carried out by the Revolutionary National Police and features Tony Santa Cruz as one of its main characters. He is a criminal interested in obtaining wealth and material possessions through illegal activities.
At one point, Tony becomes involved with a group of Americans connected to drug trafficking, international theft, and currency speculation. These characters are interested in taking out of Cuba some ancient coins found at the bottom of the sea, whose value is related to their age.
But things do not turn out the way Tony expected. The very people he becomes involved with end up taking advantage of and deceiving him. From there, the story develops through a series of situations, investigations, and mysteries that keep the reader curious.
My experience with the book
I have always had a certain preference for crime and detective series and movies. I enjoy stories filled with mysteries to solve, clues to follow, and situations that keep you trying to figure out what will happen next. However, until now, I had never really explored this genre through a book.
And I have to say that I absolutely loved the experience.
One of the things I enjoyed the most was feeling that the story was connected to an environment that is familiar to me. The use of simple language and expressions typical of Cuban slang also made the reading feel very natural and entertaining.
The story was so engaging that, almost without realizing it, I finished the book in just a few days. Whenever I had the opportunity to continue reading, I felt curious to find out what would happen next. That feeling of wanting to read just a few more pages—and then a few more—was one of the things I enjoyed the most.
I believe one of the best things a book can do is awaken our curiosity about other books. And that is exactly what happened to me.
“Primero muerto…” was my first approach to crime fiction, and instead of feeling satisfied after this first experience, it awakened in me the desire to continue exploring the genre.
Now I am curious to discover what other crime novels and authors might surprise me. Perhaps this is only the beginning of a new stage in my reading journey.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes la impresión que me dejó un libro que llegó a mis manos de una manera muy especial: me lo prestó mi mamá.
Desde el primer momento, el libro llamó mi atención, aunque debo confesar que su aspecto no era precisamente el de un ejemplar nuevo. Su carátula estaba un poco vieja y deteriorada por el paso del tiempo, así que tuve que tratarlo con mucho cuidado para evitar que terminara dañándose aún más. Sin embargo, precisamente ese aspecto de libro vivido me hizo sentir que tenía entre mis manos una historia que ya había acompañado a alguien durante muchos años.
El libro se titula “Primero muerto…”, escrito por Justo E. Vasco y Daniel Chavarría, autores vinculados a la literatura policíaca cubana.
¿De qué trata?
La historia gira alrededor de una investigación de la Policía Nacional Revolucionaria y tiene como uno de sus personajes principales a Tony Santa Cruz, un delincuente interesado en conseguir riquezas y bienes materiales mediante actividades ilícitas.
En determinado momento, Tony se relaciona con un grupo de norteamericanos vinculados al narcotráfico, los robos internacionales y la especulación de divisas. Estos personajes están interesados en sacar de Cuba unas monedas antiguas encontradas en el fondo del mar, cuyo valor está relacionado con su antigüedad.
Pero las cosas no salen como Tony esperaba. Las mismas personas con las que se relaciona terminan aprovechándose de él y engañándolo. A partir de ahí comienza a desarrollarse una historia llena de situaciones, investigaciones y misterios que mantienen la curiosidad del lector.
Mi experiencia con el libro
Siempre he sentido cierta preferencia por las series y películas policíacas y detectivescas. Me gusta ese tipo de historias en las que hay misterios por resolver, pistas que seguir y situaciones que mantienen al espectador intentando descubrir qué sucederá al final. Sin embargo, hasta ahora nunca había tenido la oportunidad de adentrarme realmente en este género a través de un libro.
Y debo decir que la experiencia me encantó.
Una de las cosas que más disfruté fue sentir que la historia estaba relacionada con un entorno que me resulta cercano. Además, encontrar un lenguaje sencillo y expresiones propias de la jerga cubana hizo que la lectura resultara todavía más natural y entretenida.
La narración me pareció tan amena que, casi sin darme cuenta, terminé el libro en pocos días. Cada vez que tenía la oportunidad de continuar leyendo, sentía curiosidad por saber qué ocurriría después. Esa sensación de querer avanzar unas páginas más —y luego otras— fue precisamente una de las cosas que más disfruté.
Creo que una de las mejores cosas que puede hacer un libro es despertar nuestra curiosidad por otros libros. Y eso fue exactamente lo que ocurrió conmigo.
“Primero muerto…” fue mi primer acercamiento a la literatura policíaca y, lejos de quedarme satisfecha con esta primera experiencia, terminó despertando en mí el deseo de seguir explorando el género.
Ahora tengo curiosidad por descubrir qué otros autores y novelas policíacas pueden sorprenderme. Quizás este sea solamente el comienzo de una nueva etapa como lectora.
