This Robert the Bruce statue towers atop SAIT hill which is just in front of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. His presence there is a testament to the original founders of the city of Calgary's Scottish heritage.
Robert the Bruce, known as Robert I, was a significant historical figure in Scotland during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He is best known for his role in the Scottish Wars of Independence against England. Bruce's claim to the Scottish throne was initially disputed, but he eventually asserted his right to rule and was crowned King of Scots in 1306.
One of his most famous victories was at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, where he successfully defended Scotland against a much larger English army led by King Edward II. This battle played a pivotal role in securing Scotland's independence.
Robert the Bruce's reign saw the consolidation of Scottish sovereignty, and his efforts laid the foundation for the later recognition of Scotland as an independent kingdom. He is considered a national hero in Scotland, and his legacy is celebrated in Scottish history and culture.
