Canada is a country that holds a lot of special memories for me.
During the summer after my sophomore year of college, many international students gave up their summer vacation to take summer classes and earn extra credits. Meanwhile, I still didnโt have a clear goal in mind and was basically wasting my time.
Around that time, my roommate suggested that I make some summer memories by taking a trip around the United States on Amtrak, the passenger rail service that operates across the country.
By then, I had been studying in the United States for three years and was gradually becoming more comfortable speaking and listening to English in everyday life. Even so, traveling alone was still something I had never really considered. I simply didnโt have that kind of solid confidence in myself yet.
That kind of worry was still very much a part of me.
Looking back now, I have nothing but gratitude for the friend who saw me wasting away my summer and encouraged me to travel around America.
Looking back, I think that was the first time I had ever traveled alone outside the state where I lived. It was a journey that gave me the confidence to think, โMaybe I really can make it on my own in America.โ
And one of the places I visited on that journey was Canada.
My trip began in Chicago and headed west. The first city where I got off the train was Seattle. Since I had made it all the way to Seattle, I decided to take a bus from Seattleโs Union Station to Vancouver.
Looking back, it seems incredibly reckless, but I still remember simply jumping on the bus without researching a hotel or even figuring out where I was going to stay.
At the time, I was studying at a small private university in rural America, where there were only a handful of Japanese students. In a way, it was the kind of university that attracted Japanese students who specifically did not want to be surrounded by other Japanese people.
There were still relatively few international students from China and India at the time. There were students from Korea and Taiwan, but very few Japanese students chose to attend my university.
So, for a student coming from such a small rural college town, Vancouver felt like a huge metropolis.
And there were Japanese people everywhereโJapanese people who seemed genuinely, genuinely happy chatting away with one another in Japanese.
I remember looking at those cheerful Japanese students talking in Japanese and, for some reason, becoming increasingly irritated.
I had planned to go all the way to the waterfront where there was a bust of Inazo Nitobe, but I became so annoyed that I changed trains halfway there, turned around, and went straight back.
That is one of my more ridiculous memories of Vancouver.
Looking back now, I wonder what all that anger and irritation was really about.
I think I probably projected something onto those Japanese students. I was traveling with this personal goal of gaining โthe confidence to survive on my own in America,โ and somehow, seeing them happily speaking Japanese made me feel as though they were telling me:
Of course, that was entirely in my own head.
Looking back, I was really childish.
I visited Canada several more times after that, but for some reason I never felt like staying there for an extended period. That memory would always come back to me, and somehow it kept me from wanting to return to Canada.
Then I came across this YouTube video.
And it reminded me once again that Canada really is an incredibly beautiful country. I also feel that it is a wonderful country that strives to offer its people tolerance, inclusion, and the opportunity to live together despite their differences.
Watching the video made me think once again:
Iโd really like to go back someday.
