what to do?
i left home friday and it was a long weekend, got home today to find that my apartment - my kitchen to be specific - had been squatted by a family of pigeons - two adult pigeons and an egg.
she had layed the egg right next to the stove, so naturally my first thought was 'maybe it an offering..' but pigeon eggs are tiny and i wasn't hungry.
they had been quite industrious in my absence, a hasty and sloppy job gathering straws, leaves and plastics for the nest, they seemed more preoccupied with collecting nut shells and rocks similar to the egg in size an shape - i would assume for camouflaging the nest from aerial predators. just a messy heap of rubbish on my kitchen counter.
a friend advised me to throw the egg away, the sooner the better as it leaves the birds more summertime for building a new nest. he is a nature lover but also a pragmatic.
i would have been tempted to take his advice had i not called my mom today and shared the news. she really loves animals and now she is really adamant on not disturbing the birds, to quote her "you don't use the kitchen anyway".
cant really argue with that and i don't wanna be the heartless son who can't sacrifice his kitchen for a couple of weeks for "a noble purpose" hehe
haven't really made up my mind as to how i proceed and would appreciate advice and thoughts on this rather funny matter, anyone with similar experiences?
i live in bucharest, 6th floor of an apartment building, in one of the too many socialist residential projects that redefined the urban fiber of so many cities in eastrn europe. it also also changed the behavior of the fauna i guess, like in one of those david attenborough documentaries, opening up new real-estate and resources for animal and birds.
an extreme example is parcul national vacaresti/vacaresti national park, a huge infrastructure project started by the communist regime but abandoned. nature has reclaimed it, it is now an urban delta and park, with rare birds nesting, otters building dams and all sorts of wildlife. its been recently added to the UNESCO heritage list and thus saved from urban developers. maybe ill cover it in depth in a future post but i highly suggest you visit it if you find yourself in bucharest.
