On Halloween I want to hear something spooky but not too creepy that it grosses me out. Mostly I want to hear fun music. I like music that lifts me up and a bass that moves me to dance.
I remember hearing these songs for the first time and my whole body moved with the music. I remember listening to these songs on the radio, in the car and on the stereo. If you tune it just right you can get the seat to rock and the house to shake.
Boris the Spider - John Entwistle
What would happen if you put John Entwistle from the Who on stage with Billy Preston on Piano and Ringo Starr on drums?
You get a very lively version of Boris the Spider. This is totally a bass song as you follow the bass line up and down you feel that the spider is right there with you.
It's a creepy crawly kind of man verses spider song. This is the song I heard in the living room while the whole house shook. It rocked year at "the Kids are Alright" concert. Years have passed and Boris the Spider still lives on. They haven't squashed him yet.
Don't Fear the Reaper
I first heard this in my friend's car on the radio. I really thought they were saying, "Don't fear the refer." To me it was completely logical that this was a drug song. As a teenager I was thinking, "Yup... Refer is nothing to be afraid of."
Later I read the title and learned that the song has nothing to do with refer, but it is about the grim reaper. It kind of lost something there, but then again I look at the song from a spiritual point of view. We only have one life. It's useless to spend it fearing death.
This song is recorded after Andrew Winters had passed away. Probably the bass player here is Joe Bouchard. There are a lot of members in this band over time and yes, this track has enough cow bell.
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
This bass rift just makes me feel good. I think this song overcame the seven years of bad luck. I love the funky bass and the drum intro is so simple to provide the framework for the son. I don't care what superstition says, I am free. Some things we don't understand. We suffer superstition.
