My last post I was asking about what Steemit features would make it more fun for people and one that @elsiekjay mentioned was a resteem + comment feature. I remember when I used to use Tumblr I loved this and it definitely helps to increase engagement. I think it would be an even better way to encourage the sharing of content, maybe the resteemer even gets a little kickback? Would make for one more way for people to get involved.
Anyway, I'm not creating this post to just talk about that feature, but I actually wanted to comment on this post by @shanghaipreneur where he's talking about MeOS, the supposed "Steem Killer". Before I jump into that I highly recommend reading the article, I think it's a great read.
This guy gets it.
Now I'm not going to lie, I originally got into crypto because of hype and an opportunity I saw to make money. I'd just started getting into investing and didn't have much to actually play with so stocks moving up and down ~1-2% where not very exciting. Then I discovered crypto, bought 1 ETH and it doubled in price in two weeks.(Yes, I got in at the worst time) But I started learning from there. I learned about Bitcoin, Ethereum, Smart contracts, tons of other projects and eventually Steem, where I guess you could say I found my "home". The one I REALLY believed in above all others.
Now this is partially because I'm an artist so I can create endless content and I thought this would be a great place for me to be able to "work" my way into crypto, instead of only being able to buy my way in, but again, I started learning about the inner working of Steem, what witnesses are, how curation works, DPOS, SMT's and the vision around that, and all these things got me even more excited about this project.
I stopped focusing on just the financial aspect and really started to see the big picture here of a system that truly has the potential to change the world. I don't talk that much about it these days because I don't think people are in the mood to hear me fanboying about Steem when so many are so down, but to be honest my opinion hasn't changed.
Some of the stats that @shanghaipreneur brings up in his article, I won't go into detail about them here as you can just read his article but the main bulletpoint is that over time the distribution is going from all in the hands of whales to something more spread out. This just takes time, and there's no way around that, but to me this is the system working.
I don't care if whales are selling off, tbh I want whales to sell off. I'm not interested in yet another system where the rich just keep getting richer. I want something that's open and accessible to ANYONE in the world. Where people have a real opportunity to change their lives for the better. I don't really care about you maximizing your returns to the detriment of a system that has the potential to get crypto(read Freedom) into the hands of the global masses. Steem and social applications provide real utility while also acting as the perfect trojan horse to put crypto into people hands.
We are still so early in this industry. Those of us involved with projects need to find a way to tune out the moonboys screaming for pump & dump trading action and just hunker down and build blockchain-based ecosystems & communities that provide utility value to token holders. It's hard, but that's the way we're gonna deliver the societal change that blockchain can truly deliver.
THIS. This was the quote that really struck me. It's not about going to the moon, at least not for me. This is the Starship Enterprise and the moon is nothing. Three years is not a long time. I've worked on crappy games that took that long to make. This is just the beginning, not the end. It's all about just building applications that people want to use and that solve problems for them and bring value to their lives. That's all we need to focus on. How can we make x app, that's designed to do y, work better, offer a better experience, be easier to use, etc. Then market it. That's it.
I welcome MeOS. I hope it's cool, but it's not a "Steem Killer".We aren't living in a zero sum game world anymore, but make no mistake, all the issues that Steem has had to deal with and overcome, they'll have similar ones. They're still in the same world of a general public that is largely ignorant to the existence of crypto, and if they can aid in raising awareness, we all win. Okay, I'm going to end this rant here, usually these things are just going on non-stop in my head, but I tried to make it a somewhat comprehensible post. Thanks for reading if you made it through!
