At our refugees Center we had today a psychologist who had worked in many regions where people suffered from natural disasters or wars. She specialized in Post-Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD).

During one hour session we learnt how human brains react to life threatening situations. We first get a shot of adrenaline and cortisol which allow us to fight or flee. Once out of direct danger, our brain needs to process and file the events.

What she described, was exactly what I had seen with “our” refugees. Some had panic attacks, some fell into a state of apathy and yet some became super active. This is the Rescue phase and it can take even a month or more.

Most of the women we host, have been with us for a month now. Some have entered Recovery state. They are ready to look for themselves, to organize life in the temporary conditions.

Fingers crossed for the heroes of Ukrainian Army (and some farmers…), some of our ladies - those from western part of Ukraine in a couple of weeks could start thinking of return. They will enter the Rebuild phase and I am confident they will be successful at that.

But for many - from the eastern and southern oblasts - it will be a long time before they can even think of returning. Some will have nowhere to return to…. Yet, they will have to Rebuild their lives, too. #UA - stay #AliveAndThriving
