Meet Tomas. He is 7 months old. Now safe with good people in Wrocław, Poland. He has travelled there from Kyiv. More than 48 hours in transit via Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.
He didn’t come because his parents fancied better toys or cloths. He came with his Mom (and cat) to LIVE. His Dad is defending Kyiv.
I was the last link in an incredible chain of people who helped to get Tomas, his Mom (and cat) out of Kyiv and transfer them to Wrocław (Poland). Just one episode:
4am, a gas station by a highway. A hooded man (me) approaches a Renault Trafic van with the driver sleeping inside. Knock knock on the window:
-“Hi, am I supposed to drive for refugees”
- “oh, right. Here are the keys. You have to fuel up however, sorry for this”
- “and how do I return your car?”
- “leave it with the family taking the refugees, they will need it”
I had never met this guy before. The meeting was arranged by three phone calls, only the initial being with a person I knew. Getting into the van I only knew that the owner’s name was Alan. We did exchange phone numbers (“call me in case something happens”) but he didn’t check my identity, didn’t require any papers/signature.
Feels like being on a movie set. Except it’s real. And there 700k stories like this being played out. Here and now.
Stop the madness! Little Tomas has every right to be #AliveAndThriving. And his 20-ish years old Dad should be the one carrying him and enjoying beard hairs being pulled by those little fingers.
