Today, our early-morning temperature had already climbed to 30°C, and I immediately thought of making a cold drink to quench my thirst. I remembered the dried hibiscus leaves I had bought from the Naschmarkt in Vienna and decided they would make the perfect base for a refreshing homemade beverage.
I had specifically looked for a mint plant to use in cold drinks, especially mojitos. Having fresh mint growing in a pot is incredibly convenient, as you can simply harvest a few leaves whenever you need them.
Ginger is one ingredient that I always keep in my pantry. This piece was the last of what I had, and I wanted to use it before it dried out completely. The rest of the ingredients came together quite spontaneously. Since I had used my last lemon the day before, I substituted it with orange and clementine. Combined with freshly picked mint leaves from my potted plant, they added a wonderful aroma and a burst of fresh citrus flavor.
This drink is quick and easy to prepare. Simply boil enough water to fill a jar, then add about two tablespoons of dried hibiscus leaves along with the ginger. Let the mixture boil gently for about two minutes, then allow it to steep for another five minutes.
Afterwards, sweeten the tea with Stevia to taste and pour the liquid into a jar. Add slices of orange, clementine, and fresh mint leaves, then finish with a generous handful of ice cubes.
The result is a beautifully refreshing drink with vibrant floral notes from hibiscus, a hint of warmth from ginger, and bright citrus and mint flavors — the perfect companion for a hot summer day.
