A motto is one of the least talked about anchors in a person’s life, yet even the most questionable people live by some form of code, whether good or bad. Over the years, I have met individuals whose mottos inspired me deeply, not just because of how powerful the words sounded, but because of how consistently they lived by them. What drew me to them was not perfection but alignment, the quiet discipline of staying true to a guiding principle regardless of circumstances.
I did not consciously think about having a motto until a few years ago when I read a passage from the Bible that met me exactly where I was at the time. It was not planned or dramatic, it simply felt personal and direct, as though it was written for my situation. From that passage, one line became my anchor: "Take no thought for tomorrow, for the morrow will take thought of itself." That sentence reshaped how I approached uncertainty, ambition, fear, and even success.
Before then, I carried the weight of tomorrow too heavily, constantly thinking ahead, worrying about outcomes, trying to control what had not yet happened. Living by that line did not suddenly remove responsibility from my life, but it changed the posture of my heart. I began to handle serious situations, worries, and tensions more lightly than I used to and more lightly than many people around me. I still plan, I still prepare, but I no longer allow the future to steal the peace of my present. The positive impact has been steady and undeniable, as it has reduced anxiety, helped me focus on what I can actually control, and allowed me to show up more fully in my daily life.
If there has been any downside, it would be the risk of misunderstanding the motto as passivity, because there were moments I had to remind myself that trusting tomorrow does not mean neglecting today’s responsibilities. Over time, I have learned to balance faith with more action.
Recently, another motto has taken root in my life, one I started embracing early this year, and it's impact has already been very clear. It is simple and deeply personal... “I am divinely guided.” It may sound overly spiritual to some, but for me it is grounding. Accepting this motto has shifted how I make decisions, how I interpret delays, and how I respond to unexpected turns. Instead of forcing outcomes, I pay attention to direction.
The positive impact has shown up in clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of calm in moments that would have once unsettled me. I feel less pressured to have all the answers because I believe I am being led step by step. It has made me more intentional, not less, and more aware of the lessons hidden in daily living.
Both mottos now work together in my life, one teaching me not to be consumed by tomorrow, and the other reminding me that I am not navigating life alone. I plan to keep following them, not because they sound impressive, but because they have quietly transformed my living.
