Cinderella Tale With A K-drama Twist: "Dreaming Of A Freaking Fairytale" Review
I expected so little from this series when I saw the title, "fantasy at it's peak" with lots of funny scenes was the best I thought it would have to offer. While it didn't go far from my expectations, how the story played out was quite intriguing to see. From the casts to the storyline, all fantastic!
I hope you get that the "fantastic" there means if you decide to see this series, you're in for lot of "fantasy" and funny scenes to keep you in a sweet mood until the very end. It's a 10 episode series, each episode is less than 45mins long, yes, it's binge watchable in less than a day, I did.
"Dreaming Of A Freaking Fairytale" is a Korean spin off of Cinderella story that we never thought we needed, a more realistic story of Cinderella but at the same time, an extra touch of fantasy. How they pulled off that combination in this series perfectly is what I can't get through with.
The series is about a lady who lost her father, leaving her in debt and to struggle with her pregnant stepmother and step sisters. A letter from her dad and an advice from a friend led her to find a job with the sole purpose of finding her prince charming who will save her from poverty.
She had a meet cute (cinderella touches) with the CEO "Moon Cha-min" (charming) but didn't realize who he was and they started off on a wrong foot, they made an agreement afterwards and she started to work in "Chungdam Heaven", a social club he had created just for people to have fun.
The twists to the Cinderella story in this series is unpredictable, entertaining and kinda makes the old story we know a lie. We believed everything changes for a happily ever lifetime after a kiss but it was different in this story with the lead characters faking a real first kiss, you get that?
I've seen "Lee Jun-young" who starred as the prince charming in interesting series like "The Impossible Heir" and "Imitation", I'll be very honest to say I never thought I needed to see him in a role like this, act all cute, pitiful, have a great chemistry with the female character lovingly.
"Pyo Ye-Jin", the female lead in this series have starred in a lot of series as a supporting character but the one series I've seen that she's been in as a main character is "Strong girl Nam-soo" and she slayed in her role, so I didn't expect less from her in this one. Her acting skill is dope.
How did a lady dreaming of a freaking fairytale end up being rope tied to a chair? The reason still cracks me up whenever I think back to this scene. While the story made viewers think she had found her prince charming as they slowly fall in love with each other, another twist resurfaces.
Even with how unreal a lot of the scenes seemed, the series is packed with lessons to learn. The most exciting part of the whole experience is that, there is a voice narrating the story for us while putting in deep or funny lines that could help viewers see a clear scene in a better light.
There's also the past story, past hurt and trauma the supposed prince charming had to go through, making him walk around with a fancy walking stick/umbrella that reminds us constantly of the "Bibidi babidi buu" magic wand in the real cinderella story. The wand completes his look.
Expect lots of daydreaming, some pumpkins, a kind pregnant step mother, a funny "see women as stones" theory and most especially, expect comedy at almost every scene. There was a supporting character who had not only the female lead confused, I started to root for him.
What's a fun love story without a small competition to confirm the feelings? Expect to get a good dose of that in this story. The other aspects of the series are good enough, I never thought I'd want to recommend this series when I had it downloaded but, It was a fun one to see.
I'll give it a rating of 7.5/10 for the twists on Cinderella story I never thought I needed to see and for the happy ending that was more realistic than what I perceived it was all leading to. So tell me, will you check out this 2024 fantasy series?
