The mahomo (Lonchocarpus margaritensis and L. pictus) is a Venezuelan timber tree, formerly when corn was piled to make arepas, the mahomo trunks were highly prized for carving or carving the wooden pestles or mortars where the corn was piled or pounded.
When I was a child, I lived in a town in the central zone of the state of Anzoátegui called Cantaura (at the time of independence it was known as Chamariapa, an indigenous name, with the various translations it became Cantaura). The history of the Mahomo and my childhood is that I am part of a large family, my father rented a house for that time, then bought a huge house with living spaces and patio with lots of fruit and ornamental trees.
This new house for us was across the square from where we rented the house where we were living at the moment. It is a very wide street and in front of the new house lived a family in their house made of bahareque, the man named Gumersindo and his wife Carmen, they made friends with my mom and dad. Just in front of their house there was a tree that I later learned that its name was Mahomo (leafy tree) Mr. Gumersindo took care of a farm and to move to it he used two donkeys, they were his companions every day.
These donkeys were called Gumersindo's donkeys, he always tied them on the leg of the Mahomo and they were respected wherever they were, nobody messed with them. As the years went by, this little girl grew up and always watched with admiration the routine of this gentleman in the morning and in the afternoon when he returned. After a few years Gumersindo died and with time not so far away the donkeys died too...what then happened that the Mahomo that sheltered there the donkeys of Gumersindo was losing leaves and branches and with time in a windstorm of those well sweeping the Mahomo surrendered and fell.
When this happened I, in my spiritual ignorance, lamented and said that the Mahomo died of sadness when he saw that his faithful companions died.
Now I think that's how it happens, we see it in movies, with animals companions of their masters and plants that dry up and we humans ask.
Why, what happened
