My share today is a couple of my photos, that I digitally enhanced, , of Wisconsin barns.

When new barns were being built on farms, to preserve the wood farmers created a recipe consisting of milk, lime and red iron oxide that was cheap to make and lasted for years. The iron oxide sealed the wood and protected against moss and fungi.

Farmers noticed that the darker color absorbed more heat and kept the buildings warmer during the winter. So when red paint became available, the tradition continued and is the reason many Wisconsin barns were painted red.

The red color does add some cheer to what can often be a black and white winter landscape.
