painted allium seed heads
You are likely familiar with the culinary alliums
Onions & Shallots (Allium cepa)
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Leeks (Allium ampeloprasum)
Chives (Allium schoenoprasum)
Scallions / Green Onions (frequently Allium fistulosum)
But have you ever gow ornamental alliums?
The spherical flower clusters—called umbels—are made up of tiny, star-shaped blossoms. They gow on straight, leafless stems, creating a dramatic "lollipop" flower and add height and texture to flower beds.
Because they belong to the onion family, their bulbs taste bitter and smell sharp to animals. This makes them naturally deer and rodent-resistant, while their nectar-rich flowers are magnets for bees and butterflies.
They generally bloom in late spring to early summer.
As the colorful petals fade the spherical flower heads dry out and turn brown.
Each tiny individual flower transforms into small seed pods,
These seed pods stand for quite a while and with a little paint and artistry can be turned into a lovely visual addition to the flower garden.
These beautifully painted allium seed heads decorated a curb side flower garden in Chicago.
