Harry Belafonte died April 25, 2023 at age 96.
In 2003 I was lucky enough to receive a weekend in Frankfurt Germany as a gift that included plane tickets from Chicago. I also received tickets to see Harry Belafonte in concert at Festhalle in Frankfurt on his 76th birthday.
In 2000, after I was diagnosed with MS, I made a life list of things I wanted to see and do while I was able, and seeing Harry Belafonte checked one thing off that list.
These are two old photos of mine from that trip. The concert was almost over when a bomb threat was received. The audience was evacuated, while Harry stayed on stage singing us out of the auditorium.
Festhalle Frankfurt
During a 1979 episode of the Muppet Show Harry introduced this song about finding your identity and celebrating diversity by saying
"I discovered that song in Africa. I was in a country called Guinea, and I went deep into the interior of the country. In a little village, I met with a story-teller. That story-teller went way back into African tradition—into African mythology. He began to tell a story about the fire—which means the Sun—about the water, about the Earth. And he pointed out that all of these things put together turn the world around. And that all of us are here for a very, very short time. And in that time that we are here, there really isn't any difference in any of us IF we take time out to understand each other. And the question is, Do I know who you are? Do you know who I am? Do we care about each other? Because, if we do, together we can turn the world around." —Harry Belafonte on The Muppet Show, 1979
These Muppets were specially designed by Jim Henson with African tribal masks. Harry sang this song at Jim Henson's memorial service.

Earth Song
Two more of my favorite songs by Harry come from his 1988 Paradise in Gazankulu album. The album deals with black South Africans under the Apartheid system. It was his last studio recording.
