This photo of a pileated woodpecker is not the greatest, but seeing it in the tree in my backyard this afternoon was a rare sight for me. I have not seen one in several years and couldn't resist using it for my #featheredfriday photo.
There is solid evidence when one lives in your neighborhood!
They eat fruits, nuts and berries and especially like carpenter ants and wood-boring beetle larvae.
This woodpecker is one of the biggest forest birds in North America and I was so happy to see him!
I was only able to get a couple of shots before he flew off. But I'll be watching and listening for him to come back!
