The Patriarch, giant cactus

A natural treasure has survived for centuries on the shores of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The most significant biological specimen of this peninsula, a multicentennial tree, a cactus, "El Patriarca". This, the penultimate publication of the series "Wonders of the Hicacos Peninsula", takes us to it.

I had no idea of the existence of this tree until the local museum guide told me about it. It's far from the center of the town, almost at the end of the peninsula, very close to the Hotel with the same name. As a divine work of nature, the tree has survived centuries of inclement weather, salt exploitation in the nearby areas where it grows, construction works carried out throughout the area and other stories and events that only he knows and can not tell. What is certain is that he is still here.

Nobody knows for sure when it began to grow, some sources say that it's more than 500 years old and that it is the longest living being in Cuba. I do not vouch for the veracity of that statement, but my search for information revealed the same thing in several sites I found.

In our car we traveled about 16km in search of him, it was easy to find him because every now and then we saw a sign about him. We quickly reached a path parallel to the beach. This whole area belongs to the protected area "Varahicacos" and normally there are guided tours. We came alone and somehow we were transgressing the rules. We had to move fast 😉.

We found a small locked gate, another sign that we shouldn't be there, but we moved on. A few meters away we found it, upright, old, marked by indolent people who did not hesitate to damage its bark to leave a mark of their passage here.

According to our appreciation it rises for almost 8 meters. Its roots are thick and as long as its height, clinging to life, searching for food in the rocky substrate. It's imposing, and has not yet grown as tall as it can. This species Dendrocereus nudiflorus (also known as Aguacate Cimarron), usually grows up to 15 meters. Who knows and in 500 years it will still be here and reach that height? We won't see it, but I hope so. Nor will we hurt its trunk to leave the mark of our presence.

I'm grateful to have been able to appreciate it. It invokes respect, just as a wise old man does. I leave with the image of its rough bark, its weather-beaten branches and its stoic endurance.

Un tesoro natural ha sobrevivido por siglos en las costas de una de las playas más hermosas del mundo. El espécimen biológico más significativo de esta península, un árbol multicentenario, un cactus, "El Patriarca". Esta, la penúltima publicación de la serie "Maravillas de la península de Hicacos", nos lleva hasta él.

No tenía la menor idea de la existencia de este árbol hasta que me contara sobre él, la guía del Museo local. Está alejado del centro del poblado, casi al final de la península, muy cerca del Hotel que lleva su mismo nombre. Cómo obra divina de la naturaleza el árbol ha sobrevivido siglos de inclemencias meteorológicas, de explotación salinera en las zonas cercanas donde crece, de obras constructivas llevadas a cabo en toda esa área y a otras historias y sucesos que solo él sabe y no puede contar. Lo cierto, es que sigue aquí.

Nadie sabe a ciencia cierta cuando empezó a crecer, algunos fuentes refieren que tiene más de 500 años y que es el ser vivo más longevo de Cuba. No doy fé de la veracidad de esa afirmación, pero mi búsqueda de información me reveló lo mismo en varios sitios que encontré.

En nuestro auto recorrimos unos 18 kilómetros en su búsqueda, fue fácil encontrarlo porque a cada rato veíamos una señal sobre él. Rápido llegamos a un sendero paralelo a la playa. Toda esta zona pertenece al área protegida "Varahicacos" y normalmente se hacen visitas guiadas. Nosotros vinimos solos y de alguna manera estábamos transgrediendo las normas. Había que moverse rápido 😉.

Encontramos una pequeña puerta cerrada, otra señal de que no deberíamos estar allí, pero seguimos adelante. A unos metros lo encontramos, erguido, anciano, marcado por personas indolentes que no dudaron en dañar su corteza para dejar una marca de su paso por aquí.

Según nuestra apreciación se levanta por casi 8 metros. Sus raíces son gruesas y tan largas como su altura, aferrándolo a la vida, buscando alimentos en el sustrato rocoso. Es imponente, y aún no ha crecido lo que puede. Esta especie Dendrocereus nudiflorus (también conocido como Aguacte Cimarrón), suele crecer hasta los 15 metros. ¿Quién sabe y dentro de 500 años más aún sigue aquí y alcance esa altura? No lo veremos, pero espero que así sea. Tampoco heriremos su tronco para dejar la marca de nuestra presencia.

Agradezco haber podido apreciarlo. Invoca respeto, tal cual lo hace un anciano sabio. Me voy con la imagen de su rugosa corteza, de sus ramas marcadas por el paso del tiempo y de su estoica resistencia.
