Well, no specialty coffee this time, no Dabov brand… This post of mine is gonna be bit different. It’s already afternoon and I am a bit late today with writing my weekly coffee post. The little guy started walking on his own and in Bulgaria we make a celebration with the family about this happy event. We put on a table various items which are connected to different professions and it depends on the baby’s choice which field will it most probably choose to work at when it grows.
I think all of this is nonsense, at least with the part of the future predicting, but after all the point here is generally to have fun. The party is a bit tough for the parents because about 15 people came at home and it’s very tough to keep everyone’s plates and glasses full. But well, the party’s over and now we have some peaceful times.
One little addition. The little guy chose an electronic thermometer, so I’ll guess he’ll become a doctor. 😁
So, some days ago it was my wife’s name day and we arranged some time alone, without the kids. We decided to visit a cafe in the center of the town. The place was very nice. It opened about one or two years ago, but I have never went there.
Apart from the coffee the place has various cakes in the menu, and they are known in all the country for their tasty cakes. I decided to go for an apricot cake with some creme and biscuit foundations. My Geoff chose a Japanese inspired cake with some matcha flavorings. Both of the cakes were very delicious, to be honest! I had some skepticism about the coffee, but after all the espresso shot that they made was really good, which was not quite expected!
It was a very short coffee, a real “shot” and it tasted good! It didn’t have so intensive fruit aromas, but it was 100% arabica beans for sure. I also managed to taste some black currant or dark fruit hints, but they really weren’t so intensive as in the specialty coffees. Still this espresso was very delicious and well prepared.
And the cakes were very well enjoyed too!
A couple of days later, or exactly… yesterday 😁 I came with a very good idea to start cold brewing again. The temperatures are already very high already and a cold brewed coffee is greatly enjoyed early in the morning or even later in the afternoon.
The coffee that I buy for this cold brewing is one cheap coffee from a local shop. It’s quite cheap and it quality is somehow enough for a cold brew. I do not really want to use from my Dabov Specialty Coffee coffee, because the dose that goes in the pot for cold brewing is quite large and using my precious Dabov coffee will
be quite pricey. 😁
Maybe some day when the price of Hive becomes 5$, it will not be a big problem to cold brew with more expensive coffees!
One issue I had is that I couldn’t really remember the right ratio of coffee to water needed. All I could remember was that I need 50 grams of coffee, but how much water exactly? At the time when my coffee pot was still not broken I knew that I am supposed to fill it all the way up, but I don’t really know how much water was this. Well the good side of the cold brew coffee is that you end up with a bit concentrated coffee and you thin it to the preferred strength. So I wasn’t so worried for the final result.
I saw that Hario - the manufacturer of the cold brew pot gave some good and useful steps so this was one more hint. After all I put the filter in an ordinary mug, then coffee and finally filled all the way up with water. After an overnight rest the coffee was ready!
This morning we enjoyed some fresh cold coffee and this will most probably be my choice in the hot summer days quite often. The coffee that I used is not unique, but is quite good for this usage - cold brew. It is said to originate from Ethiopia - believed to be the home of the coffee plantations. It’s not dark roasted, maybe mid level and this results in not so bitter cup of coffee.
After all I added quite a good amount of water so that the coffee becomes more pleasurable. Water can always be added, but getting it out is impossible. So, really today’s post is over, but the weekend is not. Wish you all a great Sunday and enjoyable time with the favorite people.
See ya!
